Sean O’Malley is not so sure that someone can dose Khamzat Chimaev at the moment.
Chimaev is the newly beaten UFC Middleweight Champion. He won the 185-pound gold thanks to his dominant gripping display against Dricus du Plessis on UFC 319. “Borz” earned scores of 50-44 on the board to become a UFC champion for the first time in his career.
O’Malley has seen what is capable of Chimaev is convinced that there is no one in sight who can give him a run for his money. The former UFC Bantamweight Champion explained why during an appearance on “One night with Steiny” (Via Mmafighting).
“I just don’t see anyone beating Khamzat,” said O’Malley. “To be honest, I see anyone lasting as long as DDP did. As DDP survived, which in itself was impressive. Khamzat is a finisher. He is a murderer.”
O’Malley believes that Chimaev’s dominance could lead to a lack of excitement for his future outings than his star power.
“I just don’t see that many exciting fights in the future … It will be big fights because he is a star,” said O’Malley. “He is a superstar. It is exciting. But it is just like who do you give that guy?”
Many have compared Chimaev with Georges St-Pierre after his one-sided title victory. When “GSP” ruled the beating in the case of featherweight, it was his struggle and control that kept him at the top. St-Pierre became more risky after a shocking loss of upset for Matt Serra in 2007, and it led to his Hall of Fame Run.
Chimaev has been tested against Kamaru Usman and Gilbert Burns, but those fights were exception and not the rule. Top Middleweight contenders Nassourdine Imavov, Caio Borralho, Reinier de Ridder and Anthony Hernandez all have the chance to make strong cases for the next middleweight title fight.
