Khamzat Chimaev is not keen on the fight with Nassourdine Imavov: “There will be a lot of drama between Dagestan and the Chechen people” | BJPenn.com

While Khamzat Chimaev and Nassourdine Imavov are both in the upper echelons of the UFC’s middleweight division, a clash between the two doesn’t appear to be imminent if the former has his say. This was stated by the reigning UFC middleweight champion during a recent interview with ESPN MMA.

A snippet of the chat was posted by X account @RedCorner_MMA while Khamzat Chimaev addressed the number two contender in the weight category he coaches, Chimaev said:

“He’s a good guy. Like I know him, he knows me, we know each other. If you ask me, I don’t want to fight this guy because we know each other. Like a Muslim, he’s from Dagestan, and you know what Dagestan is like, Chechen people. Like there’s going to be a lot of drama on the internet and all these things. All these things I don’t like about it.”

“But if the UFC wants it, man, I’ll never say no. If the guy wants it, I’ll tell his manager too. I’m just like my brother. If Nassourdine wants it, I’ll have no problem with it. If he says it can wait until I move up, I’m not going to say no. I want to fight this guy. So for me, it doesn’t matter.”

Khamzat Chimaev addresses the top UFC middleweight contenders

Khamzat Chimaev sees Nassourdine Imavov as a possible candidate to challenge his throne, but ‘Borz’ also targeted some other major players in the woke category. In the same ESPN MMA interview referenced above, Chimaev also touched on possible names he could potentially fight in the future, such as former 185-pound champion Sean Strickland, as well as rising contender Anthony “Fluffy” Hernandez.

Chimaev said that these fights don’t necessarily excite him and that taking any of these future fights would be more related to the need to continue making money. Khamzat Chimaev is open to more big-name bouts in subsequent bouts, but doesn’t see the big names at middleweight, which may have motivated some of his rhetoric about wanting to move up to light heavyweight.
