Kevin Pietersen names two stars who will rock the charts at the 2026 T20 World Cup
Speaking at an ICC promotional event, Pietersen named two explosive hitters who he believes can leave a huge impact on the 2026 edition: the South African Dewald Brevis and that of India Abhishek Sharma.
Pietersen was full of praise for Brevis and pointed to a recent knock from SA20 Capitals of Pretoria who showed maturity beyond his years. Brevis came in when his side were 7 for 5, batted deep, absorbed the pressure and guided his team to a competitive total of 143. According to Pietersen, this innings could mark a turning point in Brevis’ career. Often labeled as a ‘one-trick pony’ for his six-hit prowess, the South African youngster showed composure, game awareness and adaptability – qualities that are invaluable in World Cup cricket. Pietersen noted that such blows silence critics and highlight Brevis’ evolution into a complete T20 batsman.
“Brevis played another incredible innings last night. A few days ago I called the match in Johannesburg where his team, the Pretoria Capitals, led by (Sourav) Ganguly, were struggling. They were seven for five (in the fifth over) and Brevis went (in) and batted 15 overs and they got to a winning total of 140 or 150 (143/6). (Now) that’s something that Brevis has always been criticized for. is a one-trick pony. He stands there and just tries to hit six after six after six. I said in the commentary that this could be the making of Brevis, so from that point of view he’s in there. Just because I see him a lot at the moment. Pietersen said.
Abhishek, meanwhile, received plaudits from Pietersen for what he described as one of the best T20 innings he has ever seen. Recalling Abhishek’s sensational 135 off 54 balls against England at the Wankhede Stadium, Pietersen revealed how he personally congratulated the young Indian after the match. Thirteen sixes, fearless strokeplay and total dominance from a quality bowling attack convinced Pietersen that Abhishek is not just a talent but a “real star” built for the biggest stage.
“Abhishek Sharma. I mean, my goodness. I remember Abhishek getting that 150 (135 off 54 balls; seven fours, 13 sixes) against England, remember at Wankhede Stadium last year? We were watching this and (then) he came over and we interviewed him after the match. I just put my hand on his shoulder and said, ‘Young man, that’s the best T20 innings I’ve ever had seen. international cricket.’ That boy is a real star,’ Pietersen added.

Young people are ready to make the mega event buzz
Pietersen’s choices reflect a broader trend towards the 2026 T20 World Cup: the emergence of fearless youngsters within teams. Almost every team has players cut from the same cloth as Abhishek and Brevis: hitters who play with freedom, defend their range and thrive under pressure. In modern T20 cricket, youth brings innovation, unpredictability and a refreshing lack of baggage, all of which can turn games on their head.
With India and Sri Lanka offering conditions that reward both strength and skill, the tournament is expected to be a springboard for several rising stars. While experienced campaigners will still have their say, it’s likely the young players who will set the pace, light up the scoreboards and capture the imagination.
