The Kevin Durant era with the Phoenix Suns will always feel like a “what could have been” situation, but at least everyone involved got a happy ending. The Suns have moved on, while Durant is now with the Houston Rockets and has championship aspirations again. Going to Ja Morant’s family was a strange move, but we should expect nothing less from the self-proclaimed master troll.
It doesn’t look like Morant will be with the Memphis Grizzlies much longer – a situation the Suns can take advantage of – and Durant had a little fun with this during the recent game between the Rockets and Grizzlies. With point guard Fred VanVleet done for the season, Morant is ironically exactly what the Rockets need to become true contenders. Only it’s not going to happen.
Rockets are now in the first platform after trading for Durant.
It was a phrase heard often when Durant was in The Valley, and it meant they couldn’t upgrade their roster the way they would have liked. As a result of having both Durant and Bradley Beal, the franchise was in the second apron and thus was greatly limited when it came to making trades.

This is why they cut a valuable first-round pick to move on from Jusuf Nurkic, and why the talk of adding Nikola Vucevic would never amount to anything. Once Durant was moved and Beal was bought out — a decision that’s getting better by the hour — it once again allowed the Suns to get involved in all kinds of trades.
This allowed them to add Mark Williams at center, while the move of Grayson Allen in the near future could also give them something of real value in return. Compare that to the Rockets, and while they would certainly love to add Morant or another available floor general before the season, adding Durant means that is much harder to achieve.
Right now that’s not a problem because the Rockets have a big lineup that works and they are winning games. But if they need to make changes as the season progresses, having a 37-year-old future Hall of Fame player on their roster means they won’t be able to. The great irony is that moving on from Durant would be the only realistic way to improve.
That was exactly the position the Suns found themselves in, with Beal having a no-trade clause and the organization clearly never moving Devin Booker. Flexibility in the NBA these days is one of the best tools a franchise can have, and Kevin Durant took it away from the Rockets and in turn ultimately gave it back to the Suns.
