Hal Sutton remembers that he was a Ryder Cup player. And a captain of Ryder Cup.
And be a captain of Ryder Cup ahead van de Ryder Cup.
“They venture you to promote it everywhere in the country, the PGA of America does that,” he said.
His captain came in 2004 and Before that, Sutton had played in four Ryder-Bekers, so he is well at home in the events of the biennial event. And if Keegan would call Bradley, he would know what he would tell him.
Appears in this week’s episode of Golf “Subpar” Podcast, Sutton was aware of the choice of three options opposite Bradley:
– He was able to request the American team for his match against Europe at the end of September in Bethpage Black in New York. Bradley was chosen for the role last July.
– He could play for the Americans – and not handle a captain (or handle less of the tasks). In this case, one of Bradley’s Vice-Captains would probably take over the responsibilities. Bradley is currently in eighth place in the world among Americans, and he is 10th in the US Ryder Cup Team Points classification. After Sunday’s game at the BMW championship of the PGA Tour, the top six in that classification will make the team – and on 27 August Bradley will make six Captain’s Picks to fill in the schedule.
– He was able to play captain and play. Nobody has done this since Arnold Palmer was a play captain at the 1963 event.
On ‘Subpar’ Sutton said that he would tell Bradley to play – and delegate the work of the captain to someone else.
“I think he should play, to be honest with you,” Sutton said on the podcast. “If he called me and asked me, I would say play. I always had more fun playing because you can influence the outcome of the outcome. As a captain you are no better than they play. And if they don’t play well, it’s quite difficult to win, whatever you do. You can’t surpass that. So I play.”
“Subpar” co-host Drew Stoltz then asked sutton if he should fulfill the dual role or just play.
Sutton said, “Just play.”
Stoltz said: “Just play. Send the Captainincy to someone else.”
Said Sutton: “Yes, because it takes your thoughts from the game if you also have to make a number of decisions about being captain. I think he should do that – he has qualified people who are assistants; he can have one of them do, you know.”
Said “Subpar” co-gastheer Colt Knost: “Yes. I mean, it’s clear that you don’t get many opportunities to be a Ryder Cup captain. He was clearly appointed at a very young age and he plays great wave. I just know if the job is putting the 12 best players out of it, he is one of that list.”
Sutton said, “That is also my opinion.”
Said Knost: “Yes, I like it.”
