At a joint press conference addressed by the two leaders after Shivakumar met Siddaramaiah for a breakfast meeting at the latter’s Cauvery residence, Congress seniors said they would abide by the decision of the party high command.
The breakfast meeting was called by the CM on the instructions of the Congress high command to end the deadlock over the issue that has been bothering the 2.5-year-old Congress government, with the opposition BJP warning of moving a no-confidence motion should the power struggle between the CM and his deputy continue.
Speaking at the press conference, Siddaramaiah said, “I had a breakfast meeting with Shivakumar because there was some unwanted confusion. It was created by the media.”
“We have no differences. Even today there are no differences and there will be no differences in the future. I will ensure that these do not exist from now on,” he said.
On his part, Shivakumar said people had supported the Congress party and brought it to power. Therefore, Congress must meet their expectations.
Shivakumar dismissed the differences with the CM and said, “We have no factionalism.” “We will go together, take everyone with us and adhere to the party high command.”
Shivakumar, who is also the state Congress president, said he discussed the strategy for the 2028 Assembly elections to tackle opposition parties and also the ways to deal with the no-confidence motion if the BJP proposes it in the upcoming winter session of the Karnataka legislature in Belagavi.
He also made it clear that the party would fight the 2028 elections under the leadership of AICC president Mallikarjun Kharge and Congress MP Rahul Gandhi.
“The party is at a very difficult stage in the country, we are still confident that Karnataka will play an important role (in its revival). And we will repeat the 2023 election victory in 2028,” he added.
Earlier, Shivakumar, in a social media post after the breakfast meeting, said the two leaders had a productive discussion.
“Meet Hon’ble CM Shri @siddaramaiah avaru this morning at Cauvery Residence for a breakfast meeting. A productive discussion on Karnataka’s priorities and the road ahead,” he said.
All eyes were on the outcome of the meeting.
While Siddaramaiah has claimed that he has a mandate to remain chief minister for a full term of five years, Shivakumar has indicated that he has been promised that he will be elevated on a rotational basis after two-and-a-half years.
The issue of leadership change had been going on for two months but intensified after November 20 when the Congress government completed its 2.5 years.
The Congress high command intervened on Friday and asked the two leaders to resolve the issue by talking to each other.
Accordingly, Siddaramaiah had invited his deputy to come home for a breakfast meeting.
Sources in the CMO said idli, vada, sambar, chutney and uppittu (Upma) were on the menu for the closely watched meeting over breakfast.
