The incident came to light on Monday morning (February 16) when police received information about a man being found dead on the railway tracks near the Kathogar-Imlipur underpass.
The body, which was prima facie suspected to be a case of suicide after being run over by a freight train, was identified as that of Chetram Paswan through an Aadhaar card recovered from his pocket. A motorcycle found parked nearby helped police track his residence.
When officers reached his house in Tulsiyapur’s Nai Basti area to inform relatives, they discovered the bodies of his wife, Sunita Verma, 40, and their son Deep, 16, in the house.
According to police, Sunita was found lying near the bed with a gunshot wound in her head, while Deep was found at the entrance of the bedroom with a bullet wound in his chest.

Blood stains were visible from the kitchen to the bedroom. A licensed double-barreled rifle was recovered from the spot, Additional Commissioner of Police (Law and Order) Vipin Tada said, adding that a domestic dispute appears to have taken place late on Sunday evening (February 15), following which Paswan allegedly shot his wife.
The son reportedly ran inside after hearing the shot and was also shot. Paswan then left the house, closed the main gate from outside and later ended his life on the railway tracks, an official said.
They said the case prima facie appears to be a murder-suicide, but the exact sequence of events will be confirmed only after a detailed investigation.
“Forensic teams have collected blood samples, the weapon, CCTV footage and other evidence from the crime scene. All angles, including family and financial issues, are being investigated,” Mr Tada said, adding that the bodies have been sent for post-mortem examination.
Born in Ghatampur’s Serua Bakhariya village, Paswan had retired from the Indian Army and was working as a security guard in a bank. He also received a pension. The family had moved into their newly built home about three months ago.
Police sources said Paswan had earlier taken a loan of around ₹12 lakh for his daughter’s wedding and construction of his house. The amount was said to have been repaid recently after his father sold part of the farmland and gave him the money. His daughter got married six months ago.
Neighbors told police the couple had gotten into an argument late Sunday night. However, the motive behind the murders remains unclear.
Paswan’s brother has alleged foul play, claiming the war veteran “could not have committed such an act.” He also questioned certain conditions at the scene and demanded a thorough investigation.
Police said legal action will be taken based on forensic findings and the post-mortem report.
