Karan Johar explains why Virat Kohli will never be invited to the Koffee with Karan show

In a recent interaction with tennis star Sania Mirza, prominent Indian filmmaker and Bollywood personality Karan Johar admitted that he will never extend an invitation to the best Indian cricketer. Virat Kohli in his popular chat show Coffee With Karan. The last cricketers to appear on the show was in 2019 when Hardik Pandya and KL Rahul appeared in the season opener.

Karan was recently involved in an interaction with Sania, India’s top tennis professional. After discussing various topics, a rapid-fire round followed in which Sania asked Karan which celebrity has rejected. Karan took the name of the charming actor Ranbir Kapoor. He explained that Ranbir had appeared on the show earlier. However, for the past three seasons, he has refused to return.

When Sania took Virat Kohli’s name by pushing further, Karan paused and replied that he never approached the former Indian skipper after what happened in his episode with Hardik and Rahul.

“I never asked Virat. And now I don’t ask any cricketer about what happened to Hardik and Rahul,” Karan said, as quoted by The Times of India.

For the unversed, the infamous 2019 episode made headlines after Hardik received severe backlash after his comments in several instances of the episode were termed as sexist and highly inappropriate by the media and the public at large. A public apology was issued and the players were given temporary bans by the Board of Control for Cricket in India.

During the height of the controversy, even Kohli, who was the team captain at the time, distanced himself from the views expressed on the show. He rejected the opinions of the cricketers and clearly said that the Indian team did not agree with such comments and opinions. Since that controversy, cricketers have not been approached by the Bollywood producer.

While Rahul played the recent three-match ODI series against Australia, Hardik missed the white-ball tour after sustaining an injury to his left quadriceps during an Asia Cup 2025 match in the UAE. India will next play an all-format series against South Africa at home. The assignment includes two Tests, three ODIs and five T20Is.
