What our Post expert thinks about NBA MVP
The story through the first quarter of this NBA season has been tough for the Oklahoma City Thunder love. Rightly so. The Thunder started the season 24-1 and a strong case could have been made that almost any award could go to a player or coach on the team, including Shai Gilgeous-Alexander for Most Valuable Player.
But there’s a reason they don’t give out quarterly seasonal awards. As good as the Thunder and Gilgeous-Alexander have been, Nikola Jokic and the Denver Nuggets are nipping at their heels.
The three-time MVP is somehow putting up even better numbers this season than in his previous MVP-winning years. Jokic has career highs in points (29.9) and assists (11.1), leads the league in rebounding (12.4) and shoots 44 percent from beyond the arc. His 16.51 Box Plus-Minus, a basketball benchmark for player performance, is almost three points higher than his previous record, which was already the best ever recorded in the NBA.
It makes sense, then, that Jokic is now the favorite to win MVP on Kalshi’s prediction platform, giving him a 51 percent chance of taking home the hardware versus SGA’s 43 percent.
