West Brom must make a decision on Mason’s position amid their poor form. WBA ranks 16th in the league Championship table after 23 games.
The Baggies are eight points behind in the play-offs after their 2-1 defeat at home to Bristol City last time out on Boxing Day. They are also six above the drop zone.
In this latest update Football insider claim they are admirers of Carrick as they assess their management situation. Rivals Birmingham City have also been mentioned as suitors for the former Premier League midfielder.
Carrick, 44, is out of the game since his discharge from Middlesbrough at the end of last season. Since then, he has carefully weighed his next move as he waits for the right opportunity to get back into the dugout.
As a player, the North East native had spells at West Ham, Tottenham Hotspur and Manchester United, making 706 appearances in all competitions, scoring 34 goals. He also made 34 appearances for the England national team before hanging up his boots in 2018.
West Brom are eyeing Michael Carrick
West Brom turned to Mason in the summer as their permanent replacement for Tony Mowbray. He signed a three-year contract with WBA, which runs until June 2028.
However, the 34-year-old has struggled to make an impact at The Hawthorns and is feeling the heat. He left his position in Spurs’ backroom team to take up his first number one role in the Football League, but things are not yet going to plan for him.
Carrick could be seen by the Baggies as someone who came in and turned things around. They remain in touch with the top six but risk slipping further away if they cannot rack up more wins.
The ex-top fly took Middlesbrough to the play-offs in his first season at the Riverside Stadium, but they were defeated by Coventry City in the semi-finals. They then missed the final two years before he got the chop.
