July 26, 2025 – A good start for an American field hockey team, but maybe not the one you thought of

Yesterday the field hockey team of the American men opened its run in the Pan American Cup Championship 2025 with a 6-1 win over Uruguay.

The American men’s program, for a century financed and underlined, is, as usual, against expectations. The team has never qualified for a FIH world cup and is confronted with steep chances to make it this time. The chances became steeper with the withdrawal of the Trinidad & Tobago Men’s team, which forfeited victories to Pool B men’s competitors Chile, Canada and Mexico.

Because the wolves are in Pool A, they would still have to play all three games, including tomorrow’s game against the favorites, Argentina. Although the Albicelestes Are in seventh place in the world in the newest world ranking, they are a team that is able to win world championships. They took gold at the 2016 Olympic Games, but have since been a bit of a slide. They were ninth on the World Cup 2023 and eighth at the 2024 Olympic Games.

On the other hand, the American team has a number of players with international experience, including Forward Alberto Montilla and attacking midfielder Christian de Angelis. Goalkeeper Jonathan Klages is a player who can steal a result if he has a good match, and veteran Patrick Harris has more than 150 caps for the senior side.

Does this mean that the United States could have a result of Argentina in Pool Games tomorrow? Well, let’s remember 2009, a tournament where frankly everything seemed upside down. Argentina finished third in the Pan American Cup 2009 that year, and the US finished second, a penalty stroke away from the qualification for the Fih Men’s World Cup 2010.

Stay informed, people.
