JT Miller: Problem for the Canucks, solution for the Rangers? – Hockey writers Vancouver Canuck’s latest news, analysis and more

The New York Rangers I have just called JT Miller their new captain. That in itself is an interesting development. After years without a clear leader since Ryan McDonagh was traded and Jacob Trouba left, the Rangers did not hesitate. They looked around their room, pointed to Miller and said, “He is our husband.”

Meanwhile, with the Vancouver Canucks? Miller was practically painted as the problem child. Too heavy for Elias Pettersson. To scouring in the room. Maybe even too much for head coach Rick Tocchet to manage. The Canucks decided that his fire did not fit in their future, so they moved him.

The same man. Two very different stories. What does that tell us? Maybe less about Miller, and more about the Canucks themselves.

Miller was a fit for the Rangers. For the Canucks, a misfit

Miller has not changed who he is – and not. He is intense, demanding and does not take a shift. That personality grasp in Vancouver because the Canucks wanted harmony. They wanted Pettersson to have room to grow and tackle what his problems were. They thought he didn’t need anyone who constantly barked in his ear.

But in New York? The same edge is what the Rangers wanted. They come from a season of “close but not enough” and they want urgency. If there was a poster child for urgency, this would be miller. He embodies it. He plays with a snarling, he drags teammates in the fight, and apparently that the culture that managing director Chris Drury wants for his perhaps tam-rangers.

So what is Miller? Is he a problem or a solution? The truth is both. Leadership is not one-size-fits-all. The fit depends on the dressing room around it.

What Miller, as a captain, says about organizational identity

Here the spotlight shifts back on the Canucks. Vancouver decided that Miller’s intensity was more headache than help. They bet instead to build a team that revolves around Pettersson’s skill and calm attitude. They wanted to free up the space for him to lead in his own way.

That is a philosophical choice. Do you want your dressing room led by fire or control? New York illuminated on fire. Vancouver doubled by keeping the temperature low, avoid sparks and drama on silk. And here is the kicker: whatever way you go, it is better to be right.

If the Rangers find their lead with Miller and the Canucks look soft when they belly until the late season, the decision to move Miller will matter a lot.

What the canucks lost – and what they might have avoided

In honesty there were good reasons why the Canucks continued. Miller’s hard -driving style did not always come across as constructive. He can be sharp with teammates, and not everyone thrives under it. If the Canucks believed that Dynamic stopped Pettersson, they had to make a choice.

But you can’t ignore what they have lost. Miller still has fans of Playoff-Stijl Grit Vancouver begging. He is the man who doesn’t just talk about urgency – he lives it. By continuing, they might have avoided the internal drama – but they may also have given another team the exact type of leadership they have missed.

The Bottom Line: What this movement says about the Canucks

When The Rangers View Miller as the model for their “best” team, it comes across as a backhanded shot on Vancouver. The Canucks had the same player and they decided that he did not fit. And that is the story here: it is not about Miller changing. The point is what every franchise appreciates. The Rangers see responsibility, edge and urgency. The Canucks saw conflict, friction and too much fire.

One team just gave him the “C.” The other team didn’t even want him in the room. Time will tell which organization was right. But if you are a fan of Canucks, you have to wonder if the man you were ready to push it out, perhaps the kind of leader was that you would eventually want you to keep.

Funny how hockey works. In Vancouver, Miller was the storm cloud that blocked the sun. In New York he is the lightning bolt they have waited for. The same guy, the same snarling, the same edge – but suddenly he is not a problem, he is a captain.

Perhaps leadership is really just in the eyes of the viewer.
