Former England captain Jos Buttler said he is feeling a bit frustrated with his form in the ongoing T20 World Cup. Buttler has struggled to convert starts into big scores, but the batsman stated that he will stick to his natural attacking style and has no plans to change his approach in the Super Eight stage.
The right-handed batsman scored just 53 runs in four innings at an average of 13.25 and a strike rate of 135.90. He opened the World Cup with 26 against Nepal and 21 against West Indies. However, he was sacked for 3 against both Scotland and Italy while trying to clear the infield on the power play.
I’m a bit frustrated, to be honest – Jos Buttler on poor form
Jos Buttler admitted that he batted well but the runs did not come as he expected. Buttler said turning starts into big scores has always been his strength. He pointed out that he was already working before he got out.
“I’m a bit frustrated, to be honest. I felt like I was playing really well in South Africa, in the SA20, without getting any scores,” Buttler said on his For the Love of Cricket podcast, as quoted by ESPNCricinfo.
“One thing I always pride myself on in T20s is that when you come in, you can go on and make a good contribution. I found myself getting out quite a bit in my teens and 20s, getting into the swing of things and then finding ways to get out,” he added.
Maybe you’re almost trying a little too hard – Jos Buttler
Jos Buttler admitted he may have tried a little too hard at the crease. Buttler said T20 cricket requires a positive mentality but small mistakes have cost him wickets. He said he wants to rely on his strengths and take each match step by step.
“I think [I have been] maybe almost trying a little too hard, instead of just being a little relaxed at the crease and letting it happen. I took part in the first two games, 20 chances, and it’s frustrating not to go on and make those meaningful contributions. And then a couple of low scores against Scotland and Italy… T20, you want to be positive and keep going, but [I] made a few mistakes and got out,” Buttler continued.
“I love batting, I love playing cricket and I love scoring runs. As much as you’re frustrated with your form and you obviously want to contribute to the team, part of cricket is that I love batting, so not batting as much as you’d like is frustrating. It’s just trying to remember the things you’re good at and taking each game as it comes.”
I saw Nasser Hussain say, ‘Just blast for 15 overs’ – Jos Buttler
Wicketkeeper-batsman Jos Buttler said T20 cricket forces batters to keep playing their shots. Buttler stated that he cannot bat just to stay in but must always play what the situation demands.
“T20 is one of those games that asks you to keep playing,” Buttler said. “Sometimes, if you’ve been out of form in a Test match, a batting coach might say, ‘Just catch up and try to bat for an hour, and it will come back to you – by hook or by crook, bat for an hour.'”
“But in T20 you have to keep playing the scoreboard. If you are chasing 10 overs, you have to play accordingly. I saw Nasser saying, ‘Just bat 15 overs’ and I would love to bat 15 overs but I don’t want to bat 15 overs just for myself and ignore the game. You still have to play the game,” he added.
