Montreal, Canada, July 30, 2025 | MONKEY

Teen Maya Joint relieved her first round Washington open loss of Leylah Fernandez in the Canadian Open in Montreal on Wednesday (Aest).

Fernandez, a former US Open finalist, gathered the biggest title of her career on Sunday when she won the DC Open in Washington and Anna Kalinskaya 6-1 6-2 in the final.

But her triumph was short-lived, because Joint beat the native 6-4 6-1 against Quebec. The 19-year-old bounced back from her 6-3 6-3 loss to the world no. 24 last week to take on her second career WTA 1000 victory.

Joint, arranged 45th in the world and already a double WTA title winner this year, now meets the American Seed McCartney Kessler. A victory for Joint would guarantee the first meeting between the two teenagers of the WTA Top 50, with Mirra Andreeva awaiting the winner.

The number 1 player Daria Kasatkina of Australia is ready to the third round after she beat Anna Blinkova 6-1 6-1. Kasatkina set up the victory with an opening set of 24 minutes, where she generated 14 points upon return to the five of Blinkova.

She then faces the 24th seed Marta Kostyuk, from Ukraine, for a place in the fourth round.

POPYRIN successfully launches Toronto Defense

In Toronto, Alexei Pofyrin successfully started his Canadian open defending defense with a straight-set victory over the Canadian Nicolas Arsenault.

After an opening round bye, the 18th posted Paidin defeated the world no. 636, 7-6 (7) 6-3 in their round of 64 collision.

Both players were almost impenetrable for serve, each nine aces and with similar first-service percentages-57 percent for POPYRIN, 60 percent for Arseneault.

Breekpoints turned out to be almost as elusive as the Sasquatch, where Pofyrin managed the only break of the meeting in the second set. It was one of only three break opportunities that the Australian generated for the competition.

Pofyrin, however, was even more vulture on his own service, alternating the only breaking point that Arseneault could produce.

The Australian hopes to secure back-to-back titles in Toronto, after he won the last 6-2 6-4 of last year against Andrey Rublev.

The victory in Canada would be a perfect adjustment to the last Grand Slam of the year of next month, the US Open in New York.

While Pofyrin continued safely to the third round in Toronto, countryman James Duckworth was unable to stop the third placed Italian Lorenzo Musetti.

Duckworth performed a good fight in the first set, before Musetti ran away with the second and gained a win of 7-5 6-1.
