John Terry has expressed his frustrations at Chelsea as he felt he should have been involved in managing the first team after Enzo Maresca left as manager.

Club legend Terry is involved in coaching the youth academy in West London and works part-time with the age selections.

The former defender cuts a towering figure at Stamford Bridge, having made 717 appearances for the Blues in all competitions.

He won five Premier League titles, the Champions League and five FA Cups during an epic spell at the heart of Chelsea’s defence.

Terry has made no secret of his desire to be manager of the Blues, but does not expect he will ever get the chance.

After Maresca left the club on New Year’s Day, it was Under-21 manager Calum McFarlane who managed the team for two matches, without Terry being involved.

The 45-year-old was frustrated by the situation and felt it was becoming clear he would never get the Chelsea gig without building a managerial career elsewhere.

‘I’m at the academy. I work with years 18 and 21. I love my role there. It’s like a part-time basis,” Terry said of his management ambitions GOLF LIFE.

‘I’ve always said to Chelsea, if Chelsea ever comes along, but can I realistically get Chelsea without doing the other things? Probably not.

“I think it was special for me that I was in the building and part of the 21s and the 21s group and recently played the game at Man City and I wasn’t called or involved in that.”

Asked whether he was annoyed at not being asked to play the match against Manchester City, which ended in a 1-1 draw, he said: ‘Not annoyed. probably more frustrated because I was definitely part of the group of 21 that went over.

“So even if I hadn’t taken over the team, it was clear that Calum had taken over the team. If I did very well, I would get a result from the competition. I feel like I should have been a part of that.

“Listen, people have to make decisions. I love it when people make decisions and they say ‘yes’ or ‘no’ and obviously the owner or whoever made those decisions and the sporting directors have gone, no, not including me, for whatever reason why I don’t know.

‘But that’s probably why I won’t get the Chelsea part if I don’t do the other parts. But I’m certainly not looking [for a job].’

It looked like Terry would forge a career in coaching and eventually management after his playing days came to an end in 2018.

He was Dean Smith’s assistant at Aston Villa in the Championship and then the Premier League, and later joined the same manager at Leicester City.
