Jets unable to get anything past Jesper Wallstedt fall 3-0 to the Wild

Nikolaj Ehlers earned his first win against the Jets on Friday evening, when the Hurricanes defeated the Jets in a close 4-3 game. Canada Life Center hosted this afternoon’s game, the third and final home game for the Jets before they hit the road for five straight games. The 12-8-0 Jets took on the 11-7-4 Minnesota Wild, with these two teams separated by just two points after the quarter season. The Wild had a below-average start to the season, but they entered tonight’s game on a four-game win streak.

There was a slight lineup change for the Jets this afternoon, as they ran almost the same combinations as on Friday. The forward four remained unchanged and the Jets’ defensive pairings remained the same, except for Colin Miller taking Luke Schenn’s place in the third pairing with Logan Stanley. Eric Comrie got the start in goal, his second straight start since the Jets announced Hellebuyck will be out four to six weeks. Comrie came into tonight’s game with a 4-2-0 record, a 2.84 GAA and an .899 SV%. Tonight was not the Jets best game and unfortunately it would end in defeat on Sunday afternoon.

1st Period

Tonight’s game started a little slower, perhaps because it was a Sunday afternoon game. The odds started to increase and at 7:32 Yakov Trenin was called for attacking Logan Stanley. The Jets couldn’t generate much on this power play and the game remained scoreless. Teams traded chances for the remainder of the first period, but neither team found the back of the net.

Shots on goal after 20 minutes of play were 9-7 Jets. A few stats that stood out were the hits, with the Wild outscoring the Jets 14-3. The Wild also blocked the Jets and led 10-3 in blocked shots, indicating that the Jets overall had more chances than the Wild in the 1st.

2nd Period

The energy increased in the second period, with both teams creating chances as they searched for the first goal of the match. Although the Jets had more chances midway through the game, it was the Wild who opened the scoring. Yakov Trenin won a puck battle along the boards before making a nice pass to Danila Yurov, who fired one past Comrie to open the scoring.

Trenin wins the battle, Yurov finishes it off

Less than two minutes later, Jets Captain Adam Lowry dropped the gloves on Marcus Foligno. The numbers 17 had a spirited tilt that was fairly even as Lowry tried to get his team going this afternoon. Unfortunately, the Jets were unable to gain any momentum from this battle and the game remained 1-0.

Five minutes later, Dylan DeMelo was called for interference with Matt Boldy. The Wild power play was abandoned after Kirill Kaprizov took a holding call on Adam Lowry. With less than two minutes to play in the 2nd, the Wild started a rush after a Jets chance on the power play. Marcus Johansson made a hasty drop pass back to Brock Faber, and his wrist shot was fired perfectly past Comrie to make it 2-0 Wild.

HAVE OURSELVES A SUNDAY FUNDAY

That goal definitely took the energy out of the Jets crowd and after 40 minutes of play the Wild were still up 2-0. Shots on goal were tied 13-13 in the 2nd, but the Jets couldn’t find a way to get past Jesper Wallstedt, who has been a thrower lately as he continues to share the net with Filip Gustavsson.

3rd Period

The Jets got a very early power play to start the third, as Matt Boldy was called for high-sticking just 6 seconds into the third. Once again the Jets power play couldn’t find a way to get the Jets on the board, and about 4 minutes later the Wild would make it 3-0. After a failed clearance attempt by the Jets, Matt Zuccarello and Jacob Middleton put Kirill Kaprisov in front, and he fired a wrist shot over Comrie’s shoulder.

here is the MILK you ordered

The Jets just couldn’t seem to score this afternoon and suddenly found themselves down 3-0 with not much time left. A few minutes later the two teams were awarded foul penalties, and two minutes later the Jets were awarded another power play, but again they could not solve Wallstedt. With six minutes to play, the Jets defeated the Wild 32-26, but the Wild continued to maintain a three-goal lead.

At this point it didn’t look like the Jets would score, and they did, as Wallstedt closed the door to secure the shutout. The Jets didn’t get a single shot on goal in the final six minutes and the Wild secured a 3-0 win at the Canada Life Centre. Neal Pionk left the game in the third period with a lower-body injury, and the Jets confirmed he would not return for the remainder of the game. The final shots on goal were 32-29 for the Jets, but Wallstedt was the first star tonight, earning a 32-save shutout. The season series between these two teams is now tied at 1, and these two teams next play on December 27 at the Canada Life Centre.
