The first period ended scoreless, but Seattle came out flying, pressuring Winnipeg from the opening faceoff and giving the Jets little breathing room. Winnipeg struggled to find its rhythm early and looked disorganized in both zones.
Just 2:38 into the second period, Jaden Schwartz broke the deadlock with his third goal of the year, which was the eventual game winner. Shane Wright’s shot from the right side set up a rebound into the path of Connor Hellebuyck, and Schwartz buried it unguarded in front.
jaden schwartz. that’s it.
The Jets had a few power play opportunities in the middle frame but were unable to capitalize on them as they entered the second intermission still looking to get on offense.
Seattle sealed the victory late in the third with two empty-net goals. Schwartz scored his second of the game, and captain Jordan Eberle added another to make it 3-0.
Aside from a strong effort from Hellebuyck, it was a frustrating night for Winnipeg. The Jets looked out of sync defensively and struggled to generate sustained pressure offensively. The Kraken took advantage of Winnipeg’s slow start, limited their time and space and exposed structural fractures.
“I thought they kept us out pretty well. We didn’t have a lot of Grade A chances, a few, but we didn’t get a lot of bounce,” defenseman Neal Pionk said after the game.
“He’s hard to defend when he feels like that,” head coach Scott Arniel said. “I think he was mad at himself in the first round because he was looking a few times and trying to make plays. In the third he did a really good job of drawing fouls.”
