Jets shutout Blackhawks 2-0 in Toews’ emotional return

2 minutes, 25 seconds Read

After collapsing in the third period on Saturday evening against the Toronto maple leavesthe Winnipeg Jets headed to the Windy City to bounce back and end their five-game series against the Chicago Blackhawks. Instead, they fell flat and were shutout 2-0 by Spencer Knight, handing Winnipeg its fifth shutout loss of the season and dropping the team to 19-23-6.

Tonight was an emotional evening for Jonathan Toews, who returned to Chicago for the first time since 2023, but this time in different discussions. The United Center remained upright throughout the tribute on the arena’s jumbotron, and even for several minutes afterwards. Toews, visibly in tears, completed several laps around the rink, waving to the crowd with his stick raised high. At one point, Toews, being the selfless player that he is, even had to ask the crowd to settle down so he could get back into the game. It was a truly emotional moment and a fantastic welcome back for number 19.

No comment necessary, the audience’s reaction says it all ❤️

The Jets came out strong in the first twenty minutes, and despite the shots being as high as twelve shots apiece, I expected them to break the ice in the middle frame. Instead, the Jets got a little sloppy, allowing Jason Dickinson to stroke his sixth of the season past Connor Hellebuyck’s glove at 13:21 to open the scoring.

Hellebuyck responded with an unreal save on Connor Bedard, sliding from right to left to make a highlight-reel stop and keep it at one goal.

WHAT. THE. ALL. 😱 🤯

Through 40 minutes the Jets still had not scored, but they were only one goal behind while leading 21-19.

The story was much the same in the third: too passive and not enough finishing. Bedard ended the match at 6:40 PM with an empty-net goal, his twentieth of the season, making it 2–0. Hellebuyck finished with 22 saves, while Knight stopped all 32 shots he faced.

During the Jets’ five-game winning streak, scoring hadn’t felt like an issue. There were contributions from across the line-up, but tonight it felt like it was November and December again. The opportunities were there, but the finish was not. The top line was once again invisible in what was a must-win game for Winnipeg’s playoff hopes. The Jets remain nine points behind Anaheim, who occupies the WC2 spot.

“(I) felt like our line was creating tonight, we just had our opportunities. I think they did a good job clearing second chance pucks around their net and didn’t hold up enough in their zone to find a way. So I have to give them credit for how they played defensively,” Toews said after the game.
Time to move on quickly. The Jets are at it again tomorrow against another Central Division foe, the St. Louis blueswho has a two-point lead. Puck drop is at 7pm CST at Canada Life Center on TSN3.
