Fares for the upcoming Johor Bahru-Singapore Rapid Transit System (RTS) Link are expected to be announced in the second half of this year and could be around S$5-7 (RM15.37-21.53) per trip. New Straits Times has reported, stating Sin Chew Daily.

Although higher than public transport fares in the Klang Valley, Transport Minister Anthony Loke told the Chinese-language daily that the RTS would still be more cost-effective than driving to Singapore (the Vehicle Entry Permit, or VEP, will reach S$50, or RM154, per day for cars in 2027), adding that the fares are set by RTS Operations (a joint venture between Malaysia’s Prasarana and Singapore’s SMRT Corporation).

“The Singapore government will not provide subsidies, so the business model must ensure sustainable development,” he said, adding that monthly passes and discounts would be difficult to implement as the Malaysian government will not subsidize Singaporean commuters.

The 4km rail link, which connects JB’s Bukit Chagar to Singapore’s Woodlands North, will be served by autonomous trains capable of carrying 10,000 passengers per hour each way. There will be 100 immigration e-gates in Bukit Chagar. When the RTS is completed in December, Keretapi Tanah Melayu’s (KTM) Shuttle Tebrau (RM5 JB-Woodlands, S$5 Woodlands-JB) will be retired. What will happen then to the century-old 1.1km railway line across the Causeway?
