Either way, when a team manages to land a rotation player outside of the lottery, it’s a huge win. It would be nice if that player was a star like Nikola Jokic or Giannis Antetokounmpo, but teams like to take a rotation player on a team-friendly rookie deal. The Utah Jazz did just this when they drafted Walter Clayton Jr.
It took Clayton no time to prove to the Jazz that they have a keeper in him. Bleacher Report’s Greg Swartz explained how Clayton has made such a strong impression in such a short time. In fact, he believes Clayton’s inclusion in the starting lineup is inevitable.
“Clayton’s first NBA game showcased his full skills in helping the Jazz eliminate the Los Angeles Clippers when he scored 10 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals in just 18 minutes.
“The opportunity is there for Clayton to play a big role this season after the Jazz parted ways with Collin Sexton and Jordan Clarkson last summer. It seems like only a matter of time before head coach Will Hardy has Clayton join veteran Svi Mykhailiuk as the team’s starting shooting guard, clearing the runway for his rookie to really spread his wings.”
Swartz even went so far as to say that Clayton sees further than the other Jazz rookie.
“(Ace) Bailey and Clayton should both become foundational pieces for the Jazz moving forward, with the latter looking like the lottery pick of the two so far.”
Clayton’s first test is coming up
At this point, praising Clayton early in the season is a dead horse for Jazz fans because they already know how good he is. However, Utah is about to get healthier with the impending return of Isaiah Collier, who finished last season as their starting point guard.
Collier certainly has his question marks as a player, but his playmaking ability is undeniable. He may also have extra incentive to prove himself as Clayton wastes no time in making an impact and Keyonte George’s ascension.
When the Jazz are at full strength, Clayton will have to work harder to earn a living. Utah traded for him because they believe he can be an important part of their future. So far he has shown that he can do that. The next step is to put him next to Collier and George. Or maybe even better if everything goes his way.
