Chelsea is perhaps world champions, but Jamie Carragher claims that they have not been advanced since Todd Boehly led a takeover of the club of £ 4.25 billion in May 2022.
Boehly landed on Stamford Bridge at the end of the 2021/22 season, in which Chelsea finished third in the Premier League, reached the quarterfinals of the Champions League, reached both domestic cup final and the UEFA Super Cup and a seven-team FIFA Club Wonen won.
Chelsea has since finished 12th, sixth and fourth in the Premier League – and they are currently fifth for Saturday’s trip to Manchester United.
Last season Enzo Maresca – the sixth Chelsea manager to work under Boehly – won the UEFA Europa Conference League before he was swollen in the USA in the USA in the US in the US in the summer.
But Carragher does not see those trophies as sufficient evidence to support suggestions that the Blues van Boehly are moving in the right direction.
Chelsea has spent almost £ 2 billion on transfer costs on the Boehly watch. This includes an edition of £ 296.5 million during a record -breaking transfer window this summer.

CARRIJFHER told CBS Sport On Wednesday evening, Chelsea was driven away from the standards that was set when Thomas Tuchel was in charge under Blueco. The former defender of Liverpool spoke after Chelsea fell to a humiliation of 3-1 defeat in Bayern Munich in their opening match in the competition phase of the Champions League.
“There is no good or wrong way to run a football club and to be successful; it doesn’t matter the system. The point I try to make is that we can’t pretend that this has been a success so far after three and a half years.
“They came to a club and the manager was Thomas Tuchel – he had won the Champions League in that club [in 2021]. At that stage under Thomas Tuchel, Manchester City and Liverpool were perhaps the best two teams in world football, next to Real Madrid, so it was very difficult for everyone to win the Premier League, but Chelsea was the third best team. It was not Manchester United, it was not Arsenal, it was Chelsea.
“They then change that manager, they then take a team that was very close to competing and winning trophies as they did the Champions League, and they are going to spend £ 2 billion. They are not closer – they are further away – than what that manager did three and a half years ago in terms of competing with the PREMIER League.”

Micah Richards pushes back to Carragher about Chelsea -Criticism
Micah Richards, sitting next to Carragher in the CBS studio, pushed back. He pointed out that Chelsea had climbed the competition table in each of the last two seasons and returned to the Champions League, while also beating Paris Saint-Germain on his way to winning the club World Cup.
“But progress has been made, right?” Richards answered. “If you end up in the competition in his first season, 12th, and then you end up in sixth, and then you finish fourth, and then you win the Club World Cup. We’re talking about where they are now – yes, he has spent a lot of money – but there has been progress. They beat the best team in PSG.
Carragher, however, stated that Chelsea had lost their identity as a multi -year winners.
“Let’s not forget where Chelsea comes from – Chelsea is a winning machine,” he shot back, before he rejects last season’s Triumph Triumph Triumph as “A Mickey Mouse Trophy.”
That caused a reaction from Richards, who went back: “The club World Cup? They have just defeated PSG, European champions.”
But Carragher went against again: “You just said that they have no team better than the other teams in the Premier League. How is that possible if you have spent £ 2 billion on a team?”
The Boehly Blueprint
Since taking over in 2022, Boehly and Clearlake Capital have torn the old recruitment model from Chelsea and replaced by something closer to an investment portfolio. The strategy is built around the signing of young players on ultra-long contracts, often seven or eight years-to protect both value and the accounting rules according to the Premier League profit and sustainability framework.
The logic is two -time. First, as a player thrives, Chelsea lets him tied up in the long term. If he is struggling, the length of the deal still helps to maintain the resale value. Secondly, the transfer costs under PSR rules are spread over the duration of a contract. So a signing of £ 60 million that is being written off for more than eight years has only £ 7.5 million per season in the books. That grill enables Chelsea to continue to spend heavily every summer without immediately breaking the financial limits.
The Churn has been ruthless. This summer alone, 31 deals – seven more than any other Premier League club. Chelsea spent £ 296.5 million in income and brought Joao Pedro from Brighton, Alejandro Garnacho from Manchester United and Jamie Gittens from Borussia Dortmund, while also investing in teenagers such as Estevao Williaan, Dario Essento and Mike Penders.
At the same time, they took out a record of £ 314.4 million to discharge Christopher Nunku to AC Milan, Noni Madueke to Arsenal, Joao Felix to Al Nassr and Kiernan Dewsbury-Hall to Everton, together with a major graduates from Academy. Genders, for example, were bought from the Genk for £ 17 million and immediately lent to Strasbourg, while Mamadou Sarr went the other way for £ 12 million before he was returned.
The end result was a rare performance: Chelsea managed the unusual trick to do their team again, while actually placing a net profit of £ 17.9 million in a window in which Premier League clubs combine for a record of £ 3.2 billion.
Proponents of the model-included Micah Richards in his CBS debate with Carragher-being can claim that the “smart company” is that Chelsea keeps flexible and future-proof. Critics stopped creating the risk of creating an airport termal feeling, with a constant turnover, cohesion disrupts and let managers such as Maresca knit a team together that changes year after year.
