It gets ugly: Jets drops the third game in a row to Bruins

Embarrassing? Miserable? Absurd? Whatever word you choose to describe the Winnipeg Jets’ The game they play now won’t be a positive one as they dropped their third straight game 6-3 Boston Bruins Thursday evening at Canada Life Centre. Winnipeg is now just 3-8-1 in their last twelve games.

The Jets opened the scoring 5:59 into the first period, with Morgan Barron’s fourth of the season, his first since Oct. 16 in Philadelphia, taking a 1-0 lead.

That lead did not last long. Winnipeg gave up two power-play goals in 2:04. David Pastrnak fired from the top of the right circle past Eric Comrie to make it 1-1 with his 12th of the season, and Casey Mittelstadt put Boston ahead with his 7th after a clear clearance from Mason Lohrei.

Just 40 seconds later, Sean Kuraly slid behind the Jets’ defense, took a chipped pass from Tanner Jeannot and scored on a breakaway to make it 3–1. It mirrored Tuesday’s loss to Dallas, where the Stars scored twice in just over a minute to take a 3-0 lead. Again, too much puck watching and too many defensive breakdowns.

Before the period ended, Alex Iafallo capped the five-goal opening frame with his fifth of the season. He cut around Lohrei along the wall, drove to the net and barged into Joonas Korpisalo to make it 3-2 to Boston.

The second period remained quiet until late, when Hampus Lindholm stepped in a slapshot to beat Comrie for his second of the year, extending Boston’s lead to 4-2.

Gabriel Vilardi made it another one-goal game on the power play late in the period. Cole Perfetti drove into the crease trying to get the puck in, and Vilardi knocked it in for his 14th, taking the man advantage just 10 seconds into the period (17:46).

Like the second, the third period remained scoreless early until Elias Lindholm delivered the dagger with under six minutes remaining. The Jets’ defensive puck looked on again, allowing Pastrnak to find Lindholm with a perfect pass from below the goal line, and he buried his fifth to make it 5-3.

Pastrnak capped his stellar night with an empty-netter, his second goal and fourth point, giving the Bruins a 6-3 win and them improving to 19-13-0. The Jets, meanwhile, fall below .500 at 14-15-1.

Every time Winnipeg built a little momentum, it disappeared immediately. Allowing two power play goals in 2:04 didn’t help. Special teams remains a major problem, having now allowed a power play goal in seven straight games.

“I mean, tonight special teams is a big part of it. I think we have to be better especially on the PK. And then you have to give up some A’s,” said Morgan Barron. “You can look at the shot clock and whatever, all that stuff, but we gave away good chances and didn’t really give ourselves a good chance to help Comms a little bit tonight, I didn’t feel like doing that.”

The Jets are sinking, and sinking fast. The question is: who will turn this ship around? Will it have to be Connor Hellebuyck? Because the team’s two-way game doesn’t offer many other options right now.

Game #3 of the homestand goes Saturday night against the Washington Capitals. Puck drop is at 6pm CST on Sportsnet West.
