Islam Makhachev won’t move much higher in the all-time greatest rankings even if he wins at UFC 322, says MMA legend Matt Brown.
On Saturday night, Islam Makhachev will look to join a very exclusive group when he challenges Jack Della Maddalena for the UFC welterweight championship. If he wins, he will become a two-weight UFC champion, and he will do so against an opponent that many believe will give him a lot of trouble.
Of course, Islam Makhachev is already considered one of the best lightweights to ever do it, but to achieve or even come close to ‘GOAT’ status, you have to do something very special in the sport of mixed martial arts.
In a recent interview, Matt Brown addressed where he thinks Islam Makhachev will be in these rankings if he can get through JDM at MSG.
Matt Brown has an interesting take on Islam Makhachev at UFC 322
“He’s the greatest lightweight of all time,” Brown said of Makhachev on the latest episode of The Fighter vs. TheWriter. “I think that’s pretty much set in stone. I think that’s done. I don’t know what this does for him in terms of the greatest thing of all time, pound-for-pound or whatever. Because he’s already working on that.”
“He still has a long way to go to become one of the all-time greats when you talk about the Anderson Silvas and the Jon Jones and such people. He still has a long way to go, so you can’t just put him there yet.
“The idea of being a two-time champion accelerates that. You have to keep the winning streak going because that’s what the other guys did. I think that’s really the only problem. You have to have more time in the game. So it just reinforces where he is now, where he belongs. He has to be in the top three pound-for-pound, right? It doesn’t move him up a ton in my book. [among the all-time greats]right or wrong.”
