Although Ireland placed a competitive total and some late wickets, England took the opening match in the T20i series of three games By four wickets.
The match was opened in a sunny but autumn Malahide in which England won the pitch and chose to first bowen Ireland. The home team started well with openers Paul Stirling and Ross Adair to put 49 together. But each a wicket for English spinners Liam Dawson and Adil Rashid then delayed the progress of Ireland.
Harry Tector and Lorcan then looked to rebuild and after 10 overs helped to get their side to 84 for 2. The two then kicked in the second half of the innings to help post a competitive 196 for 3. A first ball six from George Dockrell from the last delivery also gave the home team a crucial boost.
During the innings, Harry Tector passed 1500 points in T20i Cricket, while Lorcan Tucker reached 3000 points for Ireland about formats. The two batters also set up 123 runs for the third Wicket – a record for Ireland men in T20Is (beating the previous best of 82 between Gareth Delany and Kevin O’Brien).
England started the perfect start on 74 for the first wicket until Matthew Humphreys Jos Butler (28) returned with Curtis Campher who took a high catch just on the edge of the ring.
Garth Delany, who played his 100th game for Ireland today about the formats, came over in the 11th attack and removed Rehan Ahmed with his third delivery, even though he was almost caught by Graham Hume with his first ball of the game.
Hume then took two wickets in the 16th to make things interesting, including those of the explosive Phil Salt (89 from 46).
To add further drama, Humphreys Tom Banton praised in his last, but Will Jacks and Jamie Overton kept their courage to cross the line and full victory in the very first bilateral T20i for men between these parties.
The attention is now running to the second game of the series in Malahide on Friday, September 19, 2025.
