MS Dhoni is expected to play his last IPL season in 2026, with Chennai Super Kings already preparing for life after him. The 44-year-old can take on the role of mentor and player before leaving the field completely.
Former CSK batsman Robin Uthappa believes there is no doubt anymore about Dhoni’s future. He believes that IPL 2026 will finally end Dhoni’s playing career but not his association with the franchise.
Uthappa said, “I think the writing is on the wall. This is clearly going to be MS Dhoni’s last season. No more conjectures, no more speculations. This year he will do well.”
Dhoni continues to contribute as a finisher, wicketkeeper and leader, but his role has slowly changed. Over the past two seasons, he has seemed more involved in coaching players and shaping decisions than being on the field full-time.
CSK’s roster build-up over the past year clearly reflects this shift. The franchise is heavily reliant on youth, suggesting a long-term rebuild that extends beyond Dhoni’s playing days.
Young players like Dewald Brevis, Ayush Mhatre and Urvil Patel impressed in the latter stages of last season. Their performances reinforced CSK’s belief in backing young talent early in the cycle.
That approach continued at the IPL 2026 mini-auction. CSK spent Rs 28.4 crore on two uncapped Indians, Prashant Veer, 19, and Kartik Sharma, 20. Both became record signings among uncapped players.
In total, CSK invested Rs 41 crore in nine players in the auction. The focus was clear: developing talent, retaining it and building a core for the next phase.
The franchise also made bold moves by trading Ravindra Jadeja to Rajasthan Royals. They brought in Sarfaraz Khan and Rahul Chahar and reshaped the side around a new cycle under the captaincy of Ruturaj Gaikwad.
Uthappa believes that Dhoni’s influence will remain central even after he retires from playing.
“We all know that if he does not play, he will guide the team. This year he will act as a mentor-cum-player,” he said.
He added that CSK’s youth investments make sense.
“If you can develop another Jadeja with the kind of mentorship that MS Dhoni provides, along with the captaincy of Ruturaj, why not?”
Dhoni has faced retirement talk for years, especially after quitting international cricket. IPL 2026 may finally close his chapter on the field, but it looks like his presence for CSK will continue from the dugout.
