When asked to name a player who would be a big surprise if he goes unsold, Irfan had no hesitation in borrowing the name of the out-of-favour India opener. The cricketer turned commentator called Shaw a ‘top quality player’ and described the amount of talent he possesses.
“I think of Prithvi Shaw. A player like Prithvi Shaw, I think the kind of talent he has should be justified by performance. Whenever I look at him, I feel, ‘This is a top quality player, and he should really deliver consistent performances,” Irfan said via Star Sports.
Talking about Shaw’s cricketing activities of late, he captained the Maharashtra team for the ongoing Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy 2025. The side failed to qualify for the knockout stages but Shaw impressed with a couple of half-centuries. The 26-year-old batsman made 183 runs during the tournament with a strike rate of no less than 160.52. Shaw has also amassed 470 runs in seven innings in the ongoing Ranji season.
Talking about his IPL career, Shaw has played for only one franchise (Delhi Capitals) so far. He went unsold at the mega auction ahead of IPL 2025. Shaw’s best season came in 2021 where he posted 479 runs in 15 matches at a strike rate of 159.13.
Shaw, along with a few other cricketers, has been included in the opening set of capped batters. It has a base price of INR 75 lakh. The franchises in need of an aggressive opening batsman are expected to go after Shaw in the auction. With the auction just around the corner, the Mumbai-born man will be hopeful of returning to the cash-rich tournament after being out of the limelight.
