Chennai Super Kings, one of the most successful teams in IPL history, could finally make some tough decisions before the IPL 2026 auction. After finishing last in the IPL 2025 season, the franchise is expected to revamp its squad and release a few big names.
According to reports, the IPL 2026 mini-auction is likely to be held between December 13 and 15, with November 15 as the retention deadline. All franchises must submit their lists of retained and released players by then, and CSK could surprise many with their picks.
CSK has released a player list
According to early discussions, Sam Curran, Devon Conway, Rahul Tripathi, Deepak Hooda and Vijay Shankar could be among the players CSK lets go for the next season.
With the retirement of R Ashwin, the franchise has already added ₹9.75 crore to its wallet and could free up almost ₹25 crore more if they part ways with the aforementioned names.
Reasons behind releasing players
Sam Curran’s return to Chennai was supposed to be a masterstroke, but it didn’t work out. Despite his high price tag and past success, Curran struggled with both the bat and ball and failed to justify his selection.
Devon Conway, who was one of CSK’s key openers in previous seasons, failed to regain his form after his injury in 2024. His poor performance last year means CSK may look for a more reliable overseas opener.
Rahul Tripathi and Deepak Hooda were both seen as dynamic Indian batters, but neither lived up to expectations. Tripathi’s inability to convert starts into big scores and Hooda’s inconsistency in the middle order left CSK lacking firepower.
Vijay Shankar, though he had some decent knocks, played too slowly when the team needed quick runs. His limited impact could also lead to his departure.
After a forgettable 2025 season, CSK looks set for a major reshuffle to rebuild a stronger and more balanced squad for IPL 2026.
