Instant Reaction: Maple Leafs fail to solve Red Wings in 2025-26, lose 2-1 in OT

The Toronto Maple Leafs may be in disarray, but they are playing some of their best hockey of the season. Unfortunately, it wasn’t enough on Wednesday evening (and throughout the season) against the Detroit Red Wings, losing 2-1 in overtime.

Yes, the extra point could come into play later, but the Maple Leafs can be pleased with their performance against a strong Red Wings hockey club. Although most of the team played a strong game, nothing compares to the type of performance that goaltender Joseph Woll delivered, especially in the first period when he made several ten-clock saves and kept the Maple Leafs in the game.

Woll stopped 14 of the 15 shots he faced in the first and let in a late goal to tie the game 1-1, which was a deflating way to end the period based on how well Woll played. You can tell the Maple Leafs netminder has found his game lately, and it’s this kind of athleticism that allows him to make saves he doesn’t need to make:

Woll wasn’t the only Maple Leaf to show up to play against Detroit, as Scott Laughton was absolutely everywhere. Laughton opened the scoring just five minutes into the match, in a shift that saw him in the right place at the right time, and it paid off. Laughton scored his seventh of the season and continues to evolve as the heartbeat of this team. His chemistry with Steven Lorentz was on full display against the Red Wings. Not only did the dynamic duo create five-on-five opportunities, they also played a huge role on the penalty kill and were a big reason why Detroit went 0-for-2 with the man advantage.

It’s worth noting that Leafs defenseman Oliver Ekman-Larsson only played 1:50 and left during the first period with a lower-body injury after taking a very awkward fall in the corner. That’s all this team needs right now, another defenseman isn’t available, and it’s made worse by the fact that OEL has been the Leafs’ most consistent blueliner all season. Let’s hope it’s not for the long haul because not only do the Maple Leafs have Ekman-Larsson in their lineup, the Olympics are just around the corner and he deserves a chance to represent Team Sweden based on how well he’s played this season.
The rest of the blueline made significant progress, with Jake McCabe leading the way for nearly 30 minutes. Simon Benoit was as physical as he has been all season, and that’s exactly the kind of game he needs to play if he doesn’t want to be included in a pre-Olympic break.

The Maple Leafs move on because all that matters now is the fact that Mitch Marner and the Vegas Golden Knights are coming to town on Friday night. Boo birds are coming, it’s going to be a wild start to the weekend at the Scotiabank Arena.
