About an hour after it was first learned that the Columbus Blue Jackets were trading Yegor Chinakhov, it was learned that he was being traded to the Pittsburgh Penguins, and details of the trade emerged.
The blue jackets confirmed that they did received a 2026 2nd RD pick, a 2027 3rd RD pick, and F Danton Heinen from the Penguins in exchange for F Yegor Chinakhov.
This is seen as a solid return for the Blue Jackets. Pierre LeBrun writes: “So CBJ traded a 2nd and a 4th for Marchment on December 19, and got a 2nd Rd pick and a 3rd Rd pick for Chinakhov (plus Danton Heinen) 10 days later.”
Chinakhov’s trade to Columbus had been expected since he requested a move this offseason. He was a 2020 first-round pick and showed flashes of top-six ability but never found success, largely due to injuries and inconsistent usage. The Penguins seem to believe they can get something out of him.
Despite the potential for the lineup this season, he was unable to secure a permanent role in Columbus, and GM Don Waddell was open to a move for him. The two biggest surprises are him being sent to a division rival and the Penguins giving up three pieces to make the trade work.
“This transaction gives us additional draft capital over the next two years and a quality two-way player in Danton Heinen who will add to our organizational depth at the forward position,” said Blue Jackets general manager Don Waddell. “As for Yegor, we believe a change of scenery was in the best interests of both him and the club and we thank him for his contributions over the past five seasons.”
The 24-year-old Chinakhov has spent his entire five-year professional career with the Blue Jackets, where he scored 37 goals, 40 assists and 77 points in 204 NHL games. This season he has collected six points (3G-3A) in 29 games.
