Sunderland 1 Newcastle 0 – Sunday 14 December 2025 2pm
Newcastle United fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
“Well, no one would have written that script.
I write this from the back row of the away side on a desperately disappointing day, where we never threatened to take control of the match even though we didn’t deserve to lose it.
Sadly, THAT GOAL will go down in derby history and be repeated for years to come.
We never threatened enough and had too many of our attacking players well below par.
It’s hard to accept and I usually look for the positives (even when we lose), but for the first time this season I can’t think of any.
A cup quarter-final win is perhaps the best antidote to this feeling of disappointment.”
Matt Busby said…:
‘Well, that was very disappointing.
We didn’t play well. We didn’t feel like it. They were ready and we weren’t. There was something definitely wrong with the way we were set up and we got what we deserved.
It’s a shame that the aggression we showed when we received three yellow cards in stoppage time was not on display in the last 90 minutes. Quite sad actually.’
Simon Ritter:
‘None of the Newcastle United players have fulfilled their potential.
I have no idea if any of the opponents did.
Only 26 minutes after taking the lead did they manage a shot on target. By then we had registered three or four without the keeper having to make a difficult save.
Woltemade is blamed for the decisive moment, but the goal can be traced back to a weak defensive header from Schar, followed by a weak header attempt from Gordon.
Too many crosses were not stopped at the source, too few Newcastle players imposed themselves. We finished the first half on the back foot and we only changed the momentum after we conceded.
The referee “let the game flow”, which played into the hands of our opponents. As might be expected, tempers boiled during stoppage time. On another day, a different referee would have been shown a red card or two before that handbag fight.
This result will not define Newcastle United’s season. We can change the story on Wednesday by qualifying for the semi-final of the League Cup that we are proud to host.
Will the head coach make some tough decisions and leave out stars considered irreplaceable for a big game?”
Mark Jankowski:
‘Completely toothless display.
We conspired to lose a match in which the opponent failed to get a meaningful shot on target.
Their only attempt to reach the goal came as a speculative effort long after we had done Sunderland’s work for them.
This will remain stuck until we can put things right later in the season.
We have bigger games ahead, but today’s disappointment will linger for a while.”
GTone:
‘I don’t know what to say about that.
We all feel the same.
Stripped for BDB and BNW.
It almost feels like we didn’t lose. They didn’t, but they won the game.
I think we need to rethink moving the ball forward to BNW as he is not a target.
I think we also need to work on getting crosses from the left side. I also think that if we chase the game and have captured them, we need a creative player to break the opposition and make a pass. We have Bruno and that’s it.
We don’t seem to be having much luck at the moment either.
Maybe this team needs a refresh. A little trade and a reorientation. Who knows. Hopefully Eddie will.”
David Punton:
‘A black day.
A bad showing and a crazy way to lose to that gang,
We have had some great days under the leadership of Eddie Howe, but this season has been difficult.
We have to keep going though, it’s a long season.
We lost and we have to take that on the chin.’
Billy Miller:
‘Why do we turn into a team of amateurs when we play Sunderland in the Premier League?
We didn’t show any fight until the 93rd minute.
Sunderland looked hungrier, feistier and more energetic in the first half.
We played a little better in the second but conceded a boring goal and handed over the bragging rights for the next three months.
On days like these I’m relieved I don’t live in the North East.’
