Aston Villa fans watched as their team lost at home to Newcastle United.
Eddie Howe’s side knocked Unai Emery and his players out of the FA Cup.
An interesting mix of opinions from Aston Villa fans.
Some were gutted and some…claimed they were ecstatic to have been knocked out of the FA Cup.
Newcastle United won 3-1 despite the appalling match officials.
Aston Villa fans respond via their Villa conversation notice board:
‘Beated today by a much better team. No complaints.’
“Chris Kavanagh did everything for us today. My MOTM.”
‘Glad to leave the FA Cup without injuries. Team can focus on the Premier League and Europa League.
Players will not feel sad about the loss, as it is thanks to Bizot’s red card.
Rest and prepare for Leeds. The important victory was Brighton on Wednesday. We must win those who matter.”
“Glad to be out of the FA Cup.” Surreal.’
“Many of us will die without seeing us win another trophy. When is the open bus parade to finish fifth?’
‘Another shame, concentrate on the top 5 of the league because we will never win an English league with this team’
‘We were in complete control 11 against 11, Bizot’s madness cost us this, Newcastle were all over the shop in the first half and never better than us’
‘Thank God that’s over.
Good mid-season game to keep our players fresh
Let’s concentrate again on the matches that we find important!’
‘Well played Newcastle.’
‘Absolutely a gift for them.
Without major mistakes from Bizot and Digne they would never have won.’
‘I shudder to think what would have happened if the referee hadn’t been so terrible.’
‘9 on the field and 5-0’
‘And if people say they want to get rid of VAR, show them this game.
The referees are absolutely useless and make wrong decisions even if they can look at them.’
“Their fans came in angry because they were going to work at SJP a few weeks ago, got really angry about the referee in the first half and then all decided they were going to Wembley after beating us.
Quite a range of emotions for that couple, good for them. Enjoy Azerbaijan on Wednesday.’
‘A return to a time when we didn’t have VAR yet. So were we then.’
‘Wow, that referee and linesman were absolutely stupid. Absolutely shocking decisions, most of them in our favour.
We were the better team 11v11, but Bizot had a blood punch.’
‘Hopefully no new injuries. We continue. To be honest, I was more annoyed by the rugby today!’
‘How many times has Danny Murphy said Bruno was missing?
I don’t remember any mention of McGinn, Tielemans or Bouba.
Interesting that!’
‘To be honest, he’s a Newcastle fan.’
‘Probably entertaining for neutrals, but overall terrible match. We got some luck from the referee, but shot ourselves in the foot many times. Newcastle were really quite poor, super wasteful – 3 shots on target and 3 goals. That makes it all the worse.’
“There’s losing and then there’s laughter and just some of the worst refereeing with a lack of VAR has ensured that we’ve managed to keep ten players on the pitch, score a goal and not get at least one penalty, maybe two.
Absolutely disgraceful, for all the world to see.”
“I’m more annoyed by how easy we made it for them when there were only ten of us left. I wouldn’t think that was possible when we saw Villa play against ten.’
‘Oh well, there are bigger matches to come.’
‘The sad reality at the moment is that we simply have to qualify for the CL in the first place because of the money. Everything else is secondary, as much as we all want to lift a trophy.”
‘A few weeks ago at SJP we showed that we are better than them
Disappointing to lose, but 11 against 11, I’m confident we’ll win even if we weren’t great.’
‘Newcastle get a huge deflected goal here and go on to win. On the third, a defensive mistake and a lucky deflection.”
“I don’t have that real angry, dejected feeling that I normally have after a loss. Have I resigned after the red card or am I not as concerned about this cup as I thought?’
‘Ref was probably MOTM for us and we threw it away anyway. Our gamesman management is terrible. We still have a few seconds left until HT and somehow we managed to get a man off the field. ‘
‘Ref deserved a very bad one from me, despite loving Villa more than I think.’
‘Honestly, I think it’s for the best that we left this competition. By far the most difficult of the three competitions we are still in, and the least important.’
‘I don’t care about this cup and that’s actually sad, but it shows how much money it means to win a national cup.’
“I don’t feel like I’m being hurt at all because we deserved to be beaten.”
‘In this world you force your happiness. Their goals were inevitable once the second half started. Absolutely sad performance in the second half.”
‘We have been prepared by the referee. If he had given a penalty there is a good chance it would remain 1-0 with Emi saving the ball, but he gave the free kick and that was it.”
‘No idea why Newcastle wanted that so badly, they don’t need extra games either.
I don’t care about the performance or the outcome because we have bigger fish to fry.”
‘I hate to lose, but if we have to lose a game, this cup is probably the cup you would take it in. I hate their fans.’
‘Ref was horrible. Every major decision was wrong, except Bizot’s departure.
We cut them open in the first half.
Bizot man of the match, Newcastle was cooked until the broadcast. He won the game for them.”
‘For all Newcastle’s sobbing, VAR would have disallowed the equalizer as Burn clearly fouls Tammy as he challenges for the ball.’
‘Var would have disallowed our goal too! The broadcast determined this result!’
‘I know I don’t have to worry about it, but we still lost… I can’t believe the referee didn’t give that penalty.
He was truly shocking tonight!’
‘The fans were good today too. This is on the players.’
“Yes, those in the stadium cared. Unlike those sitting on their couches.”
‘When I see how many people are happy that we are gone. It’s disgusting.’
‘People just say that to themselves to make them feel less bad about the results. Nobody believes it.’
‘The festivities of the northerners showed what a poor outfit they are. I’m glad we’re gone if I’m honest!’
“As much as losing them annoys me, I’m not really worried about that today. It was always going to be difficult once it got back to 10 and they equalized early in the second half. Today will probably be a blessing for us. We have bigger games to worry about.”
‘We needed a run in the FA Cup like a hole in the head, so it’s probably best we’re out. “But if you go out like that and get increasingly overrun as the second half progresses, you risk having a depressing effect on the morale of the players and fans.”
‘If I had to choose when we would beat Newcastle, a few weeks ago at their home or today, I’ll take two weeks ago 11/10 times. So I would also imagine everyone at the club in whatever capacity.”
‘We still have a chance of winning a trophy that is worth more financially than the FA Cup, and we are also a bigger fish in that pond than the FA Cup.’
‘No complaints from me, I thought it was quite even in the first half, changed by a very poor decision from the linesman which gave us an advantage and a very poor decision from our goalkeeper which completely changed the game. Up until the broadcast I thought we were ahead, but maybe not enough to deserve the lead. After the broadcast it was quite clear that we needed to score a few more goals to get through, and that always seemed unlikely.
Fair play to Newcastle, they are a good side and they managed to find a way to pick us apart and make the lead count. Good luck to them in the next round. It was a match decided by a good referee decision that might otherwise have been dominated by a bad decision, so I think they will see it as a bit of a deserved win.”
