Bayer Leverkusen 2 Newcastle 2 – Wednesday December 10, 2025 8:00 PM
Newcastle United fan/writer response from some of our regular contributors to The Mag.
Nat Seaton:
‘I would have taken a point before the game, but conceding another late goal makes me feel a bit deflated, but I can’t be greedy.
A great performance in the second half, which could have taken us higher in the table.
Well done Big Nick for winning the penalty and wow Lewis Miley, your first of hopefully many Champions League goals.
Had plenty of chances to win and hit the post twice, but they also had chances…
So it’s from Germany to Mackemland and hopefully a game to remember… for all the right reasons!’
Jamie Smith:
‘I think we could have got that draw, but the mentality problem is starting to become extremely frustrating as the team looks like a complete mess when defending a lead. Costly again, as I would assume based on the current setup, we will probably end up in the play-off zone.
Again, an option we took at the beginning, but which could be a bit overwhelming for the new year.
Can we please arrange a tactical rearguard if we are in the lead on Sunday, because my nerves can’t handle this anymore.’
Matt Busby said…:
“Another sickening late goal to deprive us of another victory. That’s twice in one week.
That said, going away to Leverkusen is not a bad result and we were on the wrong side of the nice margins we keep talking about.
Gordon and Murphy both hit the inside of the post with zingers. Why couldn’t the ball bounce into the net instead of away from the goal?
After a poor start I thought we showed resilience to take the lead after falling behind at the break.
Tony Gordon knows how to take a penalty, that’s for sure and it was a great assist from the Adidas headband for Miley’s excellent header. So happy for young Lewis.
PSV has to win, but that has always been the case. I would love to go to Paris and beat those shy people. We’ll go to the SoL and beat them.’
Mark Jankowski:
‘A good point on the road for Newcastle United will be overshadowed by the fact that we conceded another late goal to lose points.
I would have been happy with the point before kick-off and overall I think we were a bit unlucky not to come away with all three points.
Howe seemed a little slow with his substitutions, perhaps considering the weekend.
Beat the Mackems on Sunday and it’s been a good week.’
GTone:
‘A bit frustrating not to see that.
I felt like they were there for the taking at 1-2, but again we seemed to sit back and defend.
Our midfield three are arguably the best in the EPL, but tonight they were individually terrible. How strange.
I’m happy for Miley and I think Gordon is on fire!! I hope he brings that form with him on Sunday.
So it’s another game we can’t figure out. Perhaps Elanga and Wissa could have made a difference with ten minutes to go when the match was stretched. Turning them on with a few minutes to go made no difference at all.
Suppose a point is okay and the money that comes with it. Defeat PSV and the mission is accomplished. Happy days.’
David Punton:
“We had our chances to win this, but we couldn’t quite seal it.
Another match with a late concession that cost us a lot of money. One day that certainly won’t happen!
If you had offered me a draw before kick-off, I would have taken it.
They’re not mugs and it’s a hard place to go.
Still, we took the step and took the lead again, 1-0 behind.
Unfortunately, we were too deep and because this is the highest level, you are more likely to be punished.
It’s a fine line, because with a win we would almost have qualified.
Very positive to see Miley playing like this at the age of 19 and Gordon has also found his niche.
A great trip to Germany, but we have to think about what could have been. A common theme that the manager may need to think about.’
Billy Miller:
‘It’s so disappointing to lose points too late again. As a result, we have also dropped six places.
At 2-1 we were quite in sixth place, but now we are back in the play-offs spot.
On paper it’s a good draw, but with a lead until the last few minutes it’s difficult.
We struggled in the first half against a stubborn and well-organized defense, but played excellently in the second.
Gordon has looked electric at times and has become a top penalty taker.
Miley thought he had won the match with a cracking header courtesy of a brilliant cross from Gordon.
The last European action of 2025. The focus is on the weekend. Who do we have again?’
