Instagram adds watch history for reels

Oh wow, Meta has implemented yet another “new” element, this time again inspired by TikTok.

At the end of last week, Instagram chief Adam Mosseri announced that Instagram is now gets a ‘Watch history’ functionwhich makes it easier to find any video you watched in the app.

As you can see in there this exampleIn the latest version of IG, you can now find a new “Watch History” option, which shows thumbnails of all the videos you’ve watched in the app over the last 30 days.

So if you really want to show someone that one video, but you can’t remember who posted it, you can now go back through your watch history to find it.

As explained by Mosseri:

“If you go to ‘Profile’ and under ‘Settings’ under ‘Activity,’ there is now ‘View History’ so you can see every role you’ve ever viewed. You can sort it from oldest to new, or from new to old, you can go to a specific date or date range, and you can even filter it to a specific person or account who posted that role, so hopefully you can now find the thing you were trying to find that you couldn’t find before.”

Well, not “every movie you’ve ever watched” because as you can see in the screenshot examples, it only covers the last 30 days. But you can now scroll through the content you watched in the app to find that snippet you remember but can’t quite remember the details of.

Which TikTok already has, and is actually quite useful. Because there is always something that you pass by without thinking that it will come back to you at a later stage, something that you want to show to your partner, or maybe a product promotion that was actually relevant. If you don’t bookmark it, it’s gone forever and you’ll be endlessly adding qualifiers to your search text to try and find it, but now you have another option to minimize such annoyance.

So we already know this is a useful feature, and it makes sense that Reels has the same feature as well, making it easier to go back to what you saw then.

It is a relatively small, but valuable addition. The update comes to the latest version of the Instagram app.
