India’s food transformation key to global hunger battle when Western financing is falling: WFP place replacement chief

While the global hunger in the conflict, climate shocks and a devastating 40 percent financing has been lowered for the UN World Food Program (WFP), the remarkable transformation of a food-scarce nation said to a global care provider as a critical lifeline, said WFP-Adjunct-ADJUNTJUNTJUNTJUNCTEUR.

In an exclusive interview with PTI, Skau emphasized that cooperation with emerging powers as India has become essential as Western financing decreases.

“It is crucial. First, because of Western OECD countries that withdraw from financing. But I also think, more importantly, because of the solutions that India has found for herself to tackle his food security,” he said.

Skau, also the Chief Operating Officer of WFP, emphasized that Indian solutions of India apply more to crisis hit regions in Africa and Asia than recent experiences from Europe or North America.

The innovative approaches of the country, including grain numbers and rice enrichment, now reform auxiliary efforts in conflict zones such as Gaza and Sudan.

“When it comes to ideas and solutions, India, Brazil, South Africa have a lot to offer. But in the field of diplomacy, India also has more influence,” Skau noted, with the growing voice of the country in bilateral relationships, G20 forums, and if a regional super power is praised.

WFP plans to sign a memorandum of agreement during the three -day visit of Skau to guarantee predictable purchasing rice from India, making faster and higher quality assistance during crises possible.

The partnership uses the food surplus of India, where the country is now able to quickly offer large volumes during natural disasters and emergency situations.

According to Skau, the successful initiatives of India on Smart Warehousing and Supply Chain optimization are scaled worldwide by WFP.

The partnership has already yielded considerable savings, including $ 30 million by Supply Chain optimization, which is used in crises in Ethiopia and Sudan.

The National Food Security Act of the country and the afternoon meal schedule serve as models for countries such as Sudan and Haiti, where WFP wants to establish a “center of excellence” to share India’s expertise worldwide.

“The story of India because we are a country where we have now helped an exporter of food with a food surplus shows impressive progress. There are excellent initiatives that we want to draw from India to bring the world in dealing with the global food crisis,” Skau explained.

In addition to food aid, WFP looks at the growing global influence of India to promote humanitarian access in conflict zones, including Afghanistan, Myanmar, Yemen and Gaza. The diplomatic influence of India can be crucial when gaining access for assistance in these regions affected by crisis.

In Gaza, where WFP has stated famine in parts of the territory, the organization helps a million people every month but struggles with access and needs 300-400 trucks daily compared to the current 100.

“At the moment it is the worst we’ve ever seen,” said Skau, and called for an urgent cease -the fire and access.

The 40 percent financing reduction is not limited to the US, with traditional partners in Europe, the UK, the European Union and Germany that also reduce contributions. This is because humanitarian needs worldwide escalate, which forces WFP to make painful choices, he said.

In Afghanistan, the help of nearly 10 million people fell three years ago to only 1-2 million people. “In principle, we cut the hungry to give hunger. The problem with that is that next year the hungry people will be starving,” Skau warned.

The organization fears a deteriorating situation in Afghanistan this winter, because it has not been able to propose supplies for communities that become inaccessible by snow.

Conflict remains the primary engine of hunger, which affects two-thirds of the 320 million acute acute food-on-secured people worldwide, exacerbated by climate shocks and economic crises, Skau said, adding that Somalia is an example of this “perfect storm” of conflict, drought, floods and food inflation.

The Rohingya refugee crisis is a different challenge, with around a million people in Cox’s Bazar, depending on WFP -Help, unable to integrate locally or return to Myanmar.

Skau called for more attention for under -funded crises in Sudan, Haiti and the Congo, which encouraged governments, companies and individuals to offer resources and diplomatic support. He emphasized that the private sector of India and citizens could play a crucial role in financing and advocacy.

With the Zero Hunger Goal of the UN under 2030, Skau warned that inactivity risks millions of lives in global hotspots, making the partnership of India with WFP more crucial than ever in the fight against global hunger.
