The test run of India’s first urban public transport started on Thursday in Varanasi, Uttar Pradesh.
Varanasi Development Authority Vice President Pulkit Garg emphasized that the 3.8 km-gang will contain five stations that are equipped with spacious waiting areas and passenger-friendly facilities, with the entire project designed as an environmentally friendly infrastructure.
Built for an amount of £ 815 crore, including 15 years of operation and maintenance, will have the TOPEWAY 148 gondolas that are able to wear almost one Lakh passengers daily.
“The operation and maintenance for 15 years are part of the project costs … Everyone here is very enthusiastic about this … This is completely a green infrastructure … There is a 3.8 km long corridor that has 5 stations …. On all these stations, different facilities will be available for the comfort of passengers … Large waiting areas are also at all stations … levels here …”, he said.
He added that a Ropeway construction is being carried out by NHLML (National Highway Logistics Management Limited), a sister organization of NHAI (National Highways Authority of India).
“It falls under the Ministry of Road Transport and Highways … there will be 148 gondolas with a capacity of almost 1 Lakh people who run every day … A very visionary project comes to Varanasi … I rely on everyone to use this in a responsible way …”, he said.
Earlier, in the budget of Uttar Pradesh before 2023-24, special attention was paid to the improvement of rail and ropeway connectivity in the state.
Special priority was given to the first Ropeway project of India for public transport in Varanasi.
The budget of the yogi government emphasized infrastructure facilities in all development authorities of the state, including Luckknow and urban areas.
Below a provision of £ 150 crore was proposed to develop a tight road service in Varanasi and other cities.
