India risks ceding data and decisions to foreign algorithms without its own AI stack: Gautam Adani

India risks handing over control of its data, decision-making and economic behavior to foreign algorithms if it fails to build its own artificial intelligence stack, Gautam Adani, chairman of the Adani Group, said on Sunday.

Adani said that while artificial intelligence will create jobs and increase productivity, it will also concentrate economic power and information control on an unprecedented scale, making technological sovereignty a national necessity for a country of 1.4 billion people. “While job creation is essential, a country of 1.4 billion people cannot afford to leave these jobs, data, culture and collective intelligence at the mercy of foreign algorithms and balance sheets. While AI improves productivity, it also concentrates economic power, information power and decision-making power on a scale never before encountered by humanity. The greatest risk of this AI age is not that machines will think like humans, but that humans will make machines think for them. This reality is unfolding today as day across the world,” he said at the inauguration of Sharad Pawar Center for Excellence in Artificial Intelligence at Baramati in Maharashtra.

Pointing to the intensification of geopolitical rivalry, Adani says artificial intelligence has moved beyond innovation cycles and into the realm of strategic power. “The strategic competition between the United States and China has made one fact clear. AI is no longer a technological race. It is a battle for global domination. Semiconductors have become strategic assets. Data centers have become critical infrastructure. Basic AI models have become instruments of influence,” he said.

Adani said the lack of domestic AI capabilities would expose India to external economic extraction and influence. “So if India does not build its AI models, computing infrastructure and intelligence ecosystems, our behavior, preferences, markets and decisions will be extracted, trained and monetized by other countries,” he said.

He added that Adani Group’s integrated play in renewable energy, ports, transmission and data centers aims to support India’s drive for AI sovereignty, with the conglomerate now operating the country’s fastest-growing data center platform and the largest order book in the segment.
