IND vs SA: Anil Kumble and Cheteshwar Pujara respond to South African coach’s controversial comment

South Africa head coach Shukri Conrad On Saturday, the use of the term caused a major controversy “crawl” while describing his team’s intentions against India during the second Test in Guwahati. The comment, made after South Africa took full control on Day 4, left several journalists stunned and quickly drew criticism from Indian cricket greats.

While the word itself is not inherently racist, in cricket it carries heavy historical baggage due to its association with racial tensions and colonial undertones, making Conrad’s use particularly sensitive.

Why is the word ‘grovel’ controversial?

The term became infamous during England’s tour of the West Indies in 1976, when England captain Tony Greig, a white, South African-born cricketer, provocatively declared that his team would make it to the West Indies. “crawl.” The comment was widely condemned as racially insensitive, especially given the political climate and historical power dynamics of the time.

Since then “crawl‘ has remained a loaded word within cricket discourse, often seen as disrespectful when used against teams with diverse racial or colonial histories.

SA head coach says he “stole a phrase”

When South Africa set India a mammoth target of over 500 runs, Conrad doubled down on his team’s aggressive mentality.

“We wanted India to spend as much time as possible on the field. We wanted them to really grovel – steal a phrase – knock them completely out of the game and then say to them, come and survive on the last day,” he told reporters.

The coach’s casual use of the term immediately sparked debate, with many questioning the need to use such a phrase while he was on the brink of a historic victory.

Former India captain and spin legend Anil Kumble expressed shock at Conrad’s comments and urged humility from the South African camp.

“There is a history to this. Fifty years ago an English captain used the same expression against the great West Indies side, and we all know what followed,” Kumble said on Star Sports India.

“South Africa may have won the series, but when you’re on top, your choice of words matters. Humility is most important at times like these.”

Kumble noted that he expected better judgment from a seasoned coach representing a team on the brink of a historic Test series victory in India.

“I certainly did not expect this from the coach and the supporting staff. When you win, the first thing you have to do is remain humble and not say something like that at a press conference.”

Cheteshwar Pujara believes Conrad’s comment will “set Team India on fire”.

Indian batter Cheteshwar Pujara also played a role, acknowledging that Conrad’s comments would excite the locker room but could motivate the team heading into the final day.

“It sets the team on fire, but it will also hurt. I don’t think that statement will go over well,” said Pujara.

“The best way to respond is to fight – bat for three sessions and build partnerships. We are in this position because we have not played good cricket, and the answer has to come with the bat, not with words.”

With India facing an uphill battle to save the Test, Conrad’s comments have injected new emotional intensity into the already heated battle.

As both teams prepare for the decisive final day, all eyes will be on how Team India responds on the field to a comment that has reopened historical wounds and fueled modern-day cricketing pride.
