Governor of California Gavin Newsom has criticized the Trump administration for allegedly challenging road safety mandates.
Senate committee to focus on traffic safety mandates
The Senate Committee on Commerce, Science, and Transportation, led by Senator Sen. Ted Cruz (R-TX), plans to challenge automotive safety measures including automatic emergency braking and child reminder systems that alert drivers when a child is in the backseat, according to the Wall Street Journal reported on Tuesday.

The committee’s decision comes amid concerns about vehicle affordability in the US, arguing that the above-mentioned features drive up vehicle costs and do little to improve safety, the report suggests.
Lawmakers will hold a hearing in January and have reportedly summoned officials from the Detroit Big Three – Ford Motor Co. (NYSE:F), General Motors Co. (NYSE:GM And Stellantis NV (NYSE:STLA) – and also a senior Tesla Inc. (NASDAQ: TSLA) executive branch, the report said.
Ford, Stellantis, GM and Tesla did not immediately respond Of gasoline‘s request for comment.
Gavin Newsom slams the Trump administration
Newsom criticized GOP lawmakers in a post on social media platform X on Tuesday. “Republican priorities: Making it easier to get into a car accident. Great job,” Newsom said in his post.
Newsom had previously clashed with the Secretary of Transportation Sean Duffy due to the latter’s comments urging passengers to dress for air travel.
Go for technically improved security measures
The news comes as companies are doing their best to make cars safer through technological advancements, including AI. Recently, Micron Technology Inc. (nasda:mu) unveiled its UFS 4.1 storage for cars, aimed at faster AI data access, which could support advanced driver assistance systems and autonomous driving by processing data from cameras, lidar and radar sensors.
Chinese car manufacturer Nio Inc. (NYSE:NIO) also unveiled the Banyan 2.6.5 CN system, which introduces automatic emergency braking capabilities that can detect and avoid various elements on the road, such as vehicles, cyclists and pedestrians crossing diagonally.
Recently, a Tesla owner said the safety systems on board her vehicle protected her and her 3-year-old son during a head-on collision. The owner of his company’s Sentry Mode helped her share the crash footage with her attorney and authorities after the crash.

Meanwhile, former Minister of Transport Pete Buttigieg Shared that some autonomous driving technologies are “safer than humans,” adding that the technology had the potential to save many lives. He also expressed regret that the government could have made more efforts to accelerate AV adoption in the US
