Jon Talton

Moira McDonald of the Seattle Times writes about her business columnist Jon Taltonwho died last week at the age of 69.

Macdonald writes, “Among the stories he helped cover during his years at The Seattle Times, as he listed a ‘pension’ column in 2019were the collapse of Washington Mutual, the Great Recession, the Boeing Dreamliner delays, the growth of Amazon and the transformation of South Lake Union, the Northwest Seaport Alliance, losses of iconic retailers, Big Tech and the impact of growth on our city. Talton’s retirement didn’t exactly last: when he was asked to return in 2020 to help cover the pandemic’s impact on the local economy, he eagerly resumed the job he loved and contributed regular columns until just before his death.

“He talked to people on so many sides of an issue and cut through it all in a very clear way,” the Seattle Times editor-in-chief said. Michele Matassa Flores. “In writing about things like downtown’s recovery from the pandemic, he was very astute — he kind of reflected Seattle back on itself, in a way that made you think.”

“Talton ‘thought carefully and deeply about the economy and issues surrounding people’s financial well-being, and he was able to ask those tough questions of powerful people,’ he said. Becky Bisbeewho was editor of the business section when Talton was hired. A Seattle Times reader, who contacted the newspaper after Talton’s death, wrote of his appreciation for Talton’s coverage of downtown Seattle: ‘He helped me stay hopeful for our great city…and for that I am forever grateful.’”
