Throughout the country, down sizers do exactly that: trade in their large family homes for something smaller.

But not too much smaller.

And in Canberra, where development is going strong, that a large trend is driven among the houses that are on the market.

Such as Narelle Casey from Independent Property Group during the Realtalk podcast told during A recent episodeDownsizers in Canberra exchange their family homes for the “Lock-up and departure” lifestyle that offer apartments.

But contrary to what the “downsizer” writing implies, it is not so much a space -motivated movement, but rather a driven by convenience.

Developers, who respond to buyers’ behavior, then brought more extensive apartments to the market.

“We have an aging population. We notice that developers put together the product that really suits those older people,” explained Mrs. Casey.

“They still want space. They still want that, you know, 130 to 200 square meters of house. They no longer want that large garden. The children have moved.” she added.

Mrs Casey has collaborated with developers in the area, consult their product range while they are preparing to market a concept, and she said that the options for living apartments have changed considerably in the capital of the country in five years alone.

“It is no longer blocks full of apartments with one and two bedrooms. They are considerable.”

Developers, she said, ensure that apartment blocks have a diversity of available options.

It is becoming increasingly common to see apartments with one and two bedrooms included by first-home-buyers and, to a certain extent, also investors. In the same complex, the houses with three bedrooms will largely attract the downsizer cohort.

Having these options for different buyers is creating a strong sense of community, with a series of people in different phases of life who live side by side.

As for families with school -going children, those houses that Down sizers have left for maintenance options have enthusiastic people.

“We see many families on the market, especially in those in the non-central areas that buy the houses with three and four bedrooms,” she said.

With options that match different phases of life, Mrs. Casey noted that many different buyers cohorts are active in the ACT.

“Everyone is on the market.”
