Immediate Reaction: Another Leafs collapse in the third period spoils Joseph Woll’s heroics
That trend of spending far too much time defending followed in the second frame, with the added challenge of having to kill two penalties. Not only were the Leafs able to get through unscathed, but they even got a few looks while they were shorthanded. At the end of the first foul, Auston Matthews and Matthew Knies jumped free on a breakaway and had a scoring opportunity. Matthews made a nice move along the wall to get around Alex Ovechkin, allowing Knies to find open space in the slot, and he made no mistake on his shot.
The Capitals gained some extended zone time for much of the second frame, and eventually Connor McMichael cut the deficit to one.
But things fell apart for the Leafs in the third as they broke after bowing out much of the night and seeing their lead brutally shattered. Goals from Anthony Beauvillier, Jakob Chychrun and an empty-netter from Tom Wilson turned the game on its head, even though it was clear from the jump that Toronto didn’t really deserve to be in the lead for much of the evening. While Woll’s stellar play was commendable and the main reason why the final score wasn’t as lopsided, the team can’t continue to rely on their netminders to bail them out and at some point give the goaltenders a solid performance up front.
