This week, Roddick reflected on what he thought was one of the most impressive moments of the season. In doing so, the former world No. 1 said Swiatek ended her 13-month title drought by winning her first Wimbledon title.
After Swiatek ended the clay-court season without winning a single title and failed to win the French Open main for the first time since 2021, some thought the Pole was at her lowest point. But then she stormed past the championships to become champion at the very same Grand Slam tournament that had been her biggest question mark.
“Iga turning around her season at Wimbledon, that was a crazy story. It’s Iga, so we expect great things, and we’re conditioned to her being one of the best with Aryna [Sabalenka] and As [Barty] of her generation. But failing on clay, sometimes looking bad on your favorite surface, and then somehow finding a way to be dominant on your worst surface. That’s the stuff legends are made of. That’s crazy. We’ll see where it goes from here,” Roddick said on his podcast.
Swiatek responds to Roddick’s comments
The 24-year-old heard what the 2003 US Open champion had to say about her Wimbledon victory, and she responded on Instagram: “Awww.”
The Pole not only won her first Wimbledon title this year, but she did so emphatically and in historic fashion. By demolishing Amanda Anisimova 6-0 6-0, the world number 2 became the first player since 1911 to win a Championship final with a double bagel, and also the first player since 1988 to win a Grand Slam singles final with such a score.
