In the event that you have missed it in one way or another, Microsoft says goodbye to Windows 10 on October 14, 2025, when support for security updates comes to an end. This means that PC gamers who are determined to stay away from Windows 11 have a few options.
The first is just to stay on Windows 10, and if I do this, I would say it is mandatory to sign up for the Extended Security Updates (ESU) schedule to get another year’s updates. (Try not to perform a operating system without the latest security patches).
Another choice could be to finally upgrade to Windows 11 – assuming that your PC meets the hardware requirements – or you can even switch to the Bloatware -Free Tiny11 spider on the Microsoft operating system.
Or you can completely leave the Microsoft eco system and switch it to the Steamos of Valve. If you have read one of my earlier articles on this subject, you know that my favorite recommendation is Steamos, but there are advantages and disadvantages whatever choice you make.
In some respects, Valve’s Steamos (based on Linux is based) is a better gamble for gamers than Microsoft’s desktop OS – it is clear for handhelds – with a streamlined gamem mode that essentially replicates the user interface of a gaming console for the Couch – Play to be designed. However, it is not all perfect in Steamos, because there are compatibility wrinkles – in particular various popular multiplayer games (such as Call of Duty) Use anti-cheat and do not run on the operating system. Moreover, the use of certain game mods can sometimes be a little pain.
Windows 11 is still a great operating system for gaming, and you will not encounter stumbling blocks here in terms of incompatibility. It is also generally easy to get a grip on and simple enough in terms of the nuts and bolts of files and folders (file systems can be more cumbersome in Linux, certainly for calculating beginners). Microsoft also delivers a similar simple game mode experience such as Steamos, with the upcoming ‘Full-Screen Experience’ launch on the Asus Rog Xbox Ally.
Where Windows 11 falls, with some of the frustrating bugs that can perform with the monthly updates (which are forced on your PC – at least with Windows 11 Home, where you can only postpone their installation for a short time). This was especially clear with Windows 11 24h2 breaking games, in addition to often criticism online about bloatware and background processes that mess with gaming performance.
If you prefer to avoid Windows 11, and Steamos is also not your bag, so your favorite route is to stay with Windows 10 under the ESU scheme, there is one big disadvantage that it is worth mentioning on the PC gamingfront. Capcom recently announced that it will drop support for Monster hunter Games on Windows 10 and other game – publishers will certainly follow in the footsteps.
This will certainly also affect new releases from Capcom. Although I am sure the long -awaited Resident Evil Requiem Will work well on Windows 10, it will not surprise me if players are confronted with the launch or later in the line. If future game updates are not checked with Windows 10, problems can inevitably penetrate – and the developer will not tackle them.
Perhaps you have continuous security updates for Windows 10 with the ESU schedule, but if your games are not supported, it can be a big problem – and you can bet it is not just Capcom.
It is probably far on the road, but there is no guarantee now that Rockstar GTA 6 Will work well on Windows 10 – or even support. I know, that sounds like a piece, and it would be a surprise if it didn’t support Windows 10, considering how accessible GTA 5 wax. However, we look for possible 2027 or 2028 for GTA 6The final launch on PC – the large image for Windows can then look very different.
In my opinion, publishers who drop support for Windows 10 can influence so many other upcoming (or unannounced) games, that it might be best to save yourself the headache with all this and now grab your upgrade path.
If I were forced to choose, I would choose Steamos, but I have to recommend Windows 11 for those who can install it
In my eyes, Steamos is the better operating system compared to Windows when it comes to ease of use for gaming, but the OS van Valve is not yet entirely for most desktop PC users users.
For handheld gaming PCs, Steamos is an absolute no-brainer, and I would recommend choosing it every time Windows 11, because it is no secret that Microsoft’s OS is not very hand-friendly. However, Microsoft introduces the full-screen experience gamem mode, those background processes and bloatware Tames, and ultimately free more sources for games to use in Windows 11 but I am still not convinced that it will deduct Steamos for me.
However, it is a rather different photo on desktop pcs, and that is where I would recommend Windows 11 (for now). Since there is no official support from Valve to install Steamos on Desktop PCs, you must trust the clone, Bazzite, which has much better support.
Even then, unless you use AMD hardware, you will probably encounter problems with the game mode from Bazzite, specifically with Nvidia GPUs. Unless you intend to use the Steamos Desktop mode mode (which beats Steamos’ purpose), you will encounter problems with apps such as Discord – this is one of the reasons why I have not yet switched to bazzite on my desktop -PC – and you can also come across games with compatibility problems.
For some of you, these problems may not be dealbreakers, and if that is the case, you should clearly continue and try Bazzite. Otherwise it may be wise to upgrade to Windows 11 – The good of the newest update, version 25h2, is that it is probably not as problematic with bugs as 24h2 (given that 25h2 is only a very small upgrade).
