I love this Mercedes-Benz S-Class El Camino – Jalopnik so much

The Mercedes-Benz S-Class is a very good car in every respect. It’s not a perfect car though, because as we all know there’s only one way to build a perfect car: take off the rear roof and give it the El Camino treatment. It seems an enterprising engineer has risen to the challenge of perfection, because Facebook Marketplace has now made me perhaps the best car ever. This 1981 Mercedes-Benz 280SE ute trades the backseat for a bed so cleanly built it almost looks factory-like. Almost.

This Benz isn’t the first German luxury car to get this ute treatment. BMW has built a few M3s with beds, but they were always more performance-oriented than the S-Class. This W126 is not an agile performer or trackday toy, but a stately gentleman’s car. Provided that grand gentleman has to go to Home Depot for some wood or something.

It’s perfect

Jalopnik’s Mercedes enthusiast Daniel Golson tells me that these headlights are ugly US spec, but I don’t care — I am and have always been a fan of yellow foglights, and those little vertical accents are perfect. Those lights, the wheels and whitewall tires, the chrome fender flares; every detail of this car just emphasizes how luxurious it is. And then you look at the back, and it’s just not there. There has never been such a chiaroscuro vehicle, and there never will be.

The seller of this $11,500 project is not its builder, and only claims that it was once owned by him, but may not start up again. That could also be the case, as the seller hasn’t touched it since he ran the diesel engine. But how hard can it be to get a compression ignition mill running again? Just a little bit of elbow grease, and you can have a true luxury ute – something no one else can claim. If you buy this please send me pictures. I need to know it went to a good home. I love it so much.
