Last year’s Beanpot MVP came through in the clutch again. Cole Hutsonwho created numerous scoring opportunities during regulation and overtime, scored the decisive shootout goal that sent the Terriers back to the tournament championship game with a chance to defend their title.

With the shootout victory, BU advances to the finals for the 58th time in 73 tournaments. In a rematch of last year’s championship game, they will face BC, who defeated Harvard 5-1. BU has reached the title game in seven of the last nine tournaments, winning in 2015, 2022 and 2025.

In a game full of non-stop action, BU responded twice to overcome a one-goal deficit, resulting in a 2-2 tie with the Huskies after a scoreless overtime period. Together with Hutson, Jack Harvey connected in the shootout while Dylan Hryckowian had the lone goal for Northeastern.

Both BU goals came from the third line in the second period Jonathan Morello And Nick Roukounakis finding the net.

BU appeared to win the game in the final minute of extra time when Ryder Ritchie fired a shot past NU’s Lawton Zacher, but an interference call followed Gavin McCarthy on the play nullified the goal.

Although the Terriers only scored twice, they dominated possession in the offensive zone, had a 38-26 shot advantage and had more than double that number in shot attempts.

“I really liked our effort tonight,” Coach said Jay Parolfo. We played really well from start to finish. We only scored two goals again… I think we had 87 shot attempts, and we had the puck a lot tonight. It’s a shame we couldn’t win it in regular time or extra time, but we got the job done. We really needed that.”

He added: “It’s obviously been a struggle lately, but we had to have this game to get a chance to defend the Beanpot and now we have that chance.”

Similar to Friday’s loss to BC, BU played a strong opening period, skating hard and creating scoring opportunities, but trailed 1-0 after 20 minutes. The Huskies put together a power play midway through the period, with Terriers foe Dylan Hryckowian scoring from the left circle.

BU came closest to tying the score late in the period Ben Merrill hit the crossbar and then Zacher robbed Cole Eiserman with a 5 bell save.

Terriers scored the equalizer just two minutes into the second period. Charlie Trethewey took a pass from Sascha Boumedienne and made a powerful move to the bottom of the left circle. His centering pass was deflected home by Morello for his sixth count of the season.

Northeastern regained the lead after five minutes, scoring on the rush with a Jacob Mathieu lead Mikhail Yegorov from the right circle.

At 7:44, BU tied the score on a 2-on-1 rush. From the BU end, Hutson sent the puck up the boards to Roukounakis. The sophomore charged past one defender, around another, and skated into the offensive zone with Ritchie. From the left circle, he shot high over Zacher’s blocker for his fifth of the season.

Moments later, the Huskies almost regained the league after a breakaway. The shot missed the net, but Yegorov had to make a big save on a second attempt.

Yegorov emerged even bigger midway through the third period. BU had limited NU to just three shots when Hutson faded behind the Terrier net and the puck came to Hrykowian just outside the crease. Big Mike fought off the shot and kept the score even.

Later in the period, both teams rang out iron shots. Tynan Lawrence skated 1-on-3 into the offensive zone and moved to the slot, but his first shot and two follow-up attempts were defended by Zacher.

With the shootout tied at 1-1, Yegorov stopped the Huskies’ third shooter, paving the way for Hutson heroics. It’s not the first time we’ve used that phrase.

Yegorov made 24 saves, including some of the highlight reels.

Terriers won 35 of 61 draws, led by Lawrence with 13 of 21 and Kamil Bednarik with nine of 15.
