The Proposal from the Minister of Justice is among a series of attacks on prisons and guards throughout the country

The French Minister of Justice Gerald Darmanin has proposed to have prisoners pay for their prison time as part of a broader urge to combat rural growing violence.

The move follows a wave of violent incidents that are aimed at prisons and guards in France earlier this month.

In an interview with TF1 on Monday, Darmanin Breeden confirmed plans “Change the law” To support a bill that was introduced in the National Assembly in March. The Ministry of Justice estimates that maintaining the national prison system costs the state around € 4 billion a year.

Darmanin justified the proposed measure and pointed to the historical precedent and stated that “Until 2003, prisoners contributed to the costs of their imprisonment,” and made a comparison with the healthcare costs and noticed that “Just as there is a permanent hospital tax, there was a fixed indictment in prison.”

France had a promotion policy until 2003 when they were deleted during the presidency of Jacques Chirac.

The proposal comes in response to a recent wave of violence aimed at French prisons and correctional officers throughout the country for a period of two weeks in April.

According to the national anti-terrorism of France, a wave of coordinated attacks, aimed at at least ten prisons for five nights, using automatic weapons attackers.

In response, nearly 200 researchers were deployed to identify the controller. Earlier this week, the police arrested 25 suspects in coordinated operations that were performed throughout the country.

Both Darmanin and the Minister of the Interior Bruno Retaillleau have pointed to drug traffickers and the likely perpetrators, suggesting that the attacks were retraining for the government’s action against bend leaders who operate from behind bars.

Darmanin posted an open letter on X on Monday, which confirmed his “Total determination” To protect the prison staff. “The absolutely unacceptable violence and threats that have been concerned against you [prison officers] And prisons have been shocked in recent days, “ He wrote. The letter detailed new measures aimed at guaranteeing the anonymity and safety of prison protectors.

The responsibility for prison attacks was claimed by a group that calls itself the defense of the rights of French prisoners (DDPF). The group has used its telegram channel to spread threats and propaganda videos that are aimed at correction facilities and staff.

In the meantime, France has had to deal with repeated conviction of the European Court of Human Rights (EVR) about the state of its prison system, with statements that emphasize issues such as overcrowding and insufficient living conditions. Despite these statements, reports suggest that problems persist, with some prisons that work above capacity and lack insufficient facilities to guarantee human conditions for prisoners.
