Howe admits honestly as the Newcastle fans jeer the defeat

Newcastle United boss Eddie Howe has admitted he is not doing his job “well enough” – and that “not too many” of his players are currently playing at their best.

The comments came after the Magpies suffered a 3-2 defeat at home to Brentford despite leading in the first half.

Sven Botman headed in from a corner and opened the scoring before Vitaly Janelt equalized. The visitors took the lead into halftime after Igor Thiago converted a penalty.

However, the sides were level again late in the second half when Bruno Guimaraes scored a penalty himself, but the Bees had the last laugh when Dango Ouattara squeaked the ball between Nick Pope’s legs.

The defeat caps a dreadful week for Newcastle, who were soundly beaten by Liverpool at Anfield last weekend before being dumped out of the League Cup by Manchester City in midweek.

The Tyneside team are now as close to the drop zone as they are to the Champions League places in the Premier League, with fans booing the team at half-time and full-time.

“I always feel under pressure. It’s not relevant to me, the kind of pressure,” Howe said in his post-match press conference.

“When you have this job, you are always in that moment: whether it is the pressure to win or to turn the results around. We are very focused on that [second] feeling.

“I always say that the pressure I put on myself couldn’t be more extreme. I have very high standards for what I do and how I work, and what I ask of the players.”

“I’m clearly not doing my job well enough at the moment.

“I’m annoyed with myself, angry with myself, blaming myself and taking full responsibility on my shoulders. No one else.”

On his players’ performances this season, Howe added: “I have to ask them to be very honest and look at their best level and judge them against that at the moment.

“I don’t think there are too many who can say they are playing at their best. That then gives us growth to improve.”

Asked if he is concerned about the boos from his own supporters, Howe replied: “When we perform, the crowd will support us. They will support us every step of the way.

“I have no problem with their reaction today. They react to what we deliver. I don’t think that is a problem. Of course we have to turn that around with our performance.”
