There’s a blanket of snow covering much of the country, and if you’re anything like me, you’re going a little crazy. I haven’t played outdoor golf in a while, but once the snow melts and the courses open, I know where I’m going – temperatures be damned.
Winter golf isn’t my favorite form of golf, but it’s better than no golf. Living in New York City, we are lucky enough to have a few days each winter that are “warm” enough to play outside. After being cooped up inside for this stretch, I kept my eyes on the weather forecast for the next opportunity to get outside and play. As long as the mercury stays above freezing, I’m in.
If you’re like me and fancy a winter round, here are five tips to make the most of your cold weather round.
5 tips for winter golf
1. Layer up
It may be tempting to wear a thick (and warm!) jacket, but that limits your swing. Instead, opt for a series of layers of insulation. Hoodies and vests are great for keeping you warm without hindering your swing.
2. Hoof it
An easy way to stay warm in winter is to walk. It keeps you loose between takes and ensures you don’t freeze in the wind chill caused by zooming into a cart.
3. Pack a hat
Make sure you have a nice knitted hat in your golf bag. You’ll be amazed at how much warmer you stay if you replace the ball cap with a beanie.
4. Keep your paws warm
Your hands are your only connection to the club, so it’s essential that you keep them warm! Bring a few hand warmers to put in your pockets and keep your fingers in them between shots. It will make all the difference on those feeling shots around the greens.
5. Move it forward
The ball won’t go as far in the cold, so don’t be afraid to hit a box (or two!) with it. Don’t forget to take an extra club with you for most shots.
