UPDATE: Elon Musk has now done it confirmed the merger of xAI and SpaceX“to form the most ambitious, vertically integrated innovation engine on (and beyond) Earth, with AI, rockets, space-based internet, direct-to-mobile device communications and the world’s premier platform for real-time information and freedom of expression.

Well, this would certainly help secure X’s immediate future despite the ongoing revenue challenges.
According to reportsElon Musk is in the exploratory stages of a possible merger between SpaceX, his reusable rocket company, and xAI, Musk’s nascent AI side project, which is also the parent company of X the app.
The deal would bring together two of Musk’s biggest speculative projects and combine his space exploration plans with his AI development ambitions, creating a trillion-dollar business entity that could then more easily share resources on his futuristic concepts.
Musk hasn’t confirmed the plan yet, but he has provisionally indicated that discussions are underway, which would immediately strengthen X as the company slowly gets its advertising business back on track.
According to Bloombergthe most important The catalyst for the proposed merger would be xAI’s demand for capital, with Musk’s AI project currently bringing in around $1 billion per month. The need to continue expanding its data processing capabilities to power better, more responsive AI tools has caused Musk to look at alternative sources to beat OpenAI, Meta and Google in the expanding AI race.
Meta would be the main challenger here. Meta has outlined plans to invest hundreds of billions in its AI infrastructure, in its pursuit of true artificial general intelligence (AGI), the next phase of AI development.
Musk is also keen to encourage the AI shift. Rejected by his ouster in the early stages of OpenAI, which he helped create, Musk has dedicated himself to building his own AI infrastructure that will outperform all others, hoping to win lucrative AI supply contracts, especially for the US government.
Musk has the inside track on this front, although it will be difficult for xAI to keep pace with the resources of Meta, which has an ongoing cash flow through its successful advertising business. Musk has real-time data ingestion from X (and to some extent Tesla) and hardware resources, which he also shares within his companies.
But with X’s advertising business remaining stable, it needs more money to evolve its xAI, which is why a merger with SpaceX could be the right move.”
Although there is also a more direct link between the two companies that Musk could see as an important potential revenue stream.
According to Bloomberg:
“By combining his money-hungry AI startup and the more mature SpaceX, Musk can also crystallize his vision of launching data centers into space. SpaceX is seeking permission to put as many as one million satellites into orbit for the plan, according to a filing Friday. Analysts have said a merger of the two would also help Musk complete development of his heavy-lift rocket, Starship, to compete for a variety of upcoming launches, including for the US Space Force, the Golden Dome rocket shield and Artemis moon missions.”
Tying its AI business to its plan for AI data centers in space could ultimately be a valuable path for the future of AI development, and no one else can really challenge SpaceX in this regard.
Perhaps a combined SpaceX/xAI would then become a business superpower, able to pitch various investors on the potential of data center development in space, maximizing resources for evolving AI projects.
And in the short term,
Would that be a good thing?
I mean,
Reducing the need to worry about the relative placement of ads could make this worse, although X would still come under regulatory scrutiny.
But it seems Musk would prefer to be less bothered by advertisers’ concerns, as part of his mission to create a more attractive, engaging app experience. And then maybe the advertisers would come to the app anyway, because that’s where the audience is.
Regardless, the proposed merger would have real consequences for X the app and could lead to significant changes in approach on several fronts.
