Bandon, Ore. – On most days the Driving range at Bandon Dunes is not a place for stripe shows.
It is where guests of mid-to-high handicap resort ememers come out, hoping to find answers in the dirt.

On Wednesday morning, however, the practice grounds at the famous Oregon destination had a different appearance and sound. The swings were pure and the shots were equal, struck by 64 of the world’s best female amateur golfers. Match play in the 125th American women’s amateur was underway.
Among those who were loosened under Cool, Gray Skies Kiara Romero van San Jose, California, De Nieuwe Gestaken No. 1 ranked women’s amateur in the world.
Romero, a first team All-American in her first-year students and second-year seasons at the University of Oregon, is in the middle of a sparkling campaign 2025. In April she led the field on the last day of the Augusta National Women’s Amateur before she ended up in the top 10. Less than two months later in Erin’s Women’s, the US Women’s Women’s Women’s Women qualified in Women’s Womens, the US Women’s Women’s, Women’s Womens, where the US Women’s Women’s Womens, For the last round ever posted by an amateur in the event. Along the way she won the Big ten Women’s Golf Championships and was named the Big ten Women’s golfer of the year from 2025.
On Wednesday, while she prepared for her round-of-64 match against Caroline Smith van Inverness, Illinois, Romero shot under the watch of her oregon coach Derek Radley, who this week Caddying for his star player.
“What I like about her game is that there is not much thinking or technology that goes into it,” said Radley. “Back at school, she touches enough ball to come loose, but usually she just likes to hold out and play. She is the most naturally gifted ball striker that I have ever encountered in the Gulf of Ladies.”
Yet congenital talent only goes so far without solid Fundamentals, and Romero has it too.
What exactly does she do so well? And what can the rest of us learn from her? For insights we turned to wave top 100 teacher Kellie Stenzel.
A spot-on setup
On the 2025 US Women’s Open, Romero was on average 267.3 meters from the Tee, 16th in the field. She is long and accurate with her driver, success that starts before she retreats the club. “Her driver setup is fantastic,” says Stenzel. “She has the ball forward enough to have a shoulder tilt to catch the ball on a revival and maximize the distance.” Her setup is also “very square,” says Stenzel, with her shoulders, hips and feet all in line.
A huge turn
Part of the power of Romero comes from the width that she maintains on her backswing. But Stenzel says that Romero also benefits from “extreme flexibility, which makes a longer swing possible.” Note that the lower body is able to remain very stable, even with this long backswing. “All this is enviable.
An important collection meal
While Romero withdraws the club, her shoulders rotate more than her hips, a difference that is true at the top of her backswing. That rinse, combined with a perfect club head in the field, brings her to a great position to unleash to impact.
